Need help ASAP with master lock stuck on my tow hitch!! - July 21, 2009, 10:47 AM

So I bought this stupid Master Lock trailer lock and it has now rusted to the point where the key no longer works. I've tried to WD-40 it till the can ran dry and nothing. Can someone help me out or give me contact info to someone that can cut/break/melt this thing off? I need to get this lock off so I can start using the hitch again.

Buy/borrow some lock cutters and you will be golden. You can pick them up at any lowes or home depot.

or break it off with a hammer.. shouldn't be hard, even easier if it's really rusted

Not sure if a lock cutter would work. The tube part is about 3/4 in thick.

I didn't think about it but that is a good idea. If you have an angle grinder that would make quick work of it.

The pic below is what I have (1474DAT)

The entire lock isn't rusted, just where the key is inserted.

I'd honestly try some lithium grease and a hammer. Tap the hammer while you turn the key with pliers, smooth steady force. Make sure the key is fully inserted into the lock tumbler. No matter how bad it's rusted up you should be able to get it working if it's lubed and you can break the rust. A hammer against the lock mechanism and working the key and tumbler with the grease in there should work.

I have the same stupid lock, and the key broke off inside of it. I had to use some needle nose pliers to get it out. I'll never use that lock again. Good luck in getting yours off. Not to hijack the thread, but anyone know of any good hitch locks?
