Need help recovering files from a hard drive - September 25, 2011, 08:08 PM

I had a bunch of pictures and videos on my dell xps m1330 laptop and supposedly the hard drive is junk now and the files were too corrupt for geek squad to recover them. They said they can send it out but depending on what the level of corruption was it could cost up to $1600. I pretty much know nothing about computers so I was hoping someone on here could steer me in the right direction to recover these files without spending a fortune.

Depending on what they mean by junk. If the hard drive doesn't boot then no.problem you can use an external reader and still see what's on it. If the heads are jacked gonna be a lot harder. If you want I have an external hard drive reader I can Hook it up to and see if we can get the pics off. Just PM me your availability

Assuming you're not having a hardware failure, you can try hitting the drive with Knoppix. You can download the image and rip it to a cd or dvd. Boot from the cd/dvd drive when starting the machine (hit F12). You might be able to see and read the drive. If Knoppix doesn't work, I would also try using ultimate boot cd for windows. It's an image you can download and rip to cd or dvd and boot from.
If it's hardware, you can swap parts from the exact same drive that was constructed with in a few weeks ( + or -) of the bad drives assembly date. Do not do this if you are not familiar with the components of a hard drive!!! The platters are very sensitive as well as the heads!! If you have multiple platters, forget it. Since you have a laptop, this shouldn't be an issue.
If none of this interests you, check out a data recovery service. It shouldn't cost $1600. I would look around on your own and price this stuff out. I would guess that Geek Squad uses a preferred vendor who charges ludicrous prices.

There is a company called Drive Savers that can extract data from failed HDs. Prices are dependant on what needs to be done but I've seen it cost as low as $500 and as much as $2000 depending on the amount of data needed to be recovered and the condition of the drive

All the stuff posted is legit. I would take roadrunner up on his offer. I've done that and I've also had luck with the Knoppix and Windows boot CDs.

Certain hard drive failures can be temporarily overcome by freezing the drive. Take out the drive, put it in the freezer overnight, and then re-install and work quickly to get your files off.

Since you've had it looked at by "professionals" I would guees they have tried the methods ... but that being said, a little more info would help. Did the laptop just die? Is laptop working, but no Operating System boots? Can you get in windows?

Yeah alot of times new PC is cheaper than fixing the old one. Though you should be able to re-use the windows that came with the original PC.

If all this doesn't work, you can try RecoverMyFiles. Basically install it on one computer, and try to pull the files off of the one the is having issues. Don't know if you have a SATA drive connector but you can get them from this place in herndon on Sterling road where the old bike shop use to be. Take the HD out the laptop, connect it to the sata then plug it into the other computer. I had to do this when I accidently slapped my laptop where the hard drive was after getting miraculously killed by a bending bullet on COD.

Data Recovery - Recover data with our world class data retrieval, disk recovery, file recovery services and data recovery software by Kroll Ontrack

Used that before to get what I could off another .netters laptop. Pricey, but I had a cracked version.
