Need iPhone help... keep losing apps - August 12, 2009, 05:39 PM

Hi, guys!

When Mike plugs his iPhone into iTunes, it is set to automatically sync. Unfortunately, along with backing up his phone, it sucks all but some of the apps off of his phone.
This has happened twice where all but three apps get deleted off his phone and iTunes account.

I thought this might be due to the fact that his phone was originally used (synced) with a friend's computer on the night of purchase, but then you'd think that the current computer would take the music off of the phone, too, which is hasn't.

We called 1-800-MY-IPHONE and they told us he's out of free help and wanted to charge us $30 - $70 for a help program. Before we spend money on that or get off our lazy butts to go to the Apple store, I figured I'd ask my biker people first.

Thanks!!

While I may not own an iPhone, I have own several iPods and this is my conclusion. You can transfer from your computer to an unlimited amount of iPods from iTunes, but you can reverse the transfer. In other words, I'm surprised it didn't erase all of the songs the previous owners had downloaded when Mike first sync to his PC.

As far as Apps - good luck.

btw - hope you're feeling better!

Don't set it to auto sync.

Make sure the computer is authorized through iTunes for his account. You can have up to 5 different computers authorized with one apple store login. This is in one of the menus as "Authorize Computer".

After that, you can right click on the iPhone and click "Transfer Purchases" and you should be GTG for syncing.

Thanks, KK. That's just what confused me - the fact that the music wasn't deleted as well.

Rob, that sounds like it's worth a shot but what if I have an apple without a right click option?

tanya, turn on right click settings in the mouse settings area on your mac.

2nd,

Turn off auto sync. When you go through the tabs associated with the iphone, make sure you have the option of synch all. It sounds like yours is set to synch only checked apps.

What happens to all the non-purchased things you may have on the phone such as videos and music ripped fro cd's ? The only thing I have seen is to do a library backup from the original PC and then load that onto the new PC. Apple ONLY allows this to a CD/DVD writer do if your system is hosed and can't write to one you're just plain hosed..

First moving Itunes is a major PIA. I had to do it from my pc to Imac.

You have to locate all your folders that contain your non itunes music and videos. Copy over your itunes directory. I googled how to do this with more specific instructions btw. Then you have to do some trickery to have the new itunes see your old library, and then add your non itunes stuff back.

Can we say PIA!! Google the instructions, it should get you through it. I hosed my itunes on the imac 3 times before i got the move right.

I've already paid for a program that takes music from your iphone and puts it onto your computer. Worst case scenario, I'll just reverse all his music onto the computer and then have him re-order his apps and hope it works from now on.

Tanya, pm me your number.

my wife and I use the same itunes for two different devices. She has an ipod, and i use my iphone. So i am familiar with how to keep two separate "ipods" going.
