Need Mazda Mechanic - September 29, 2011, 12:01 PM

I need to cash in some favors, anyone on here work for a Mazda Dealership?

I need to change spark plugs on our 2001 Mazda Tribute V6 and apparently I have to take the whole intake manifold off, is this true?

Anyone done this? I think it is similar for the Ford Escape 2001-2003

yessir...........

supposedly you can just undo it enough to reach the back so you dont have to pull it all the way out..but honestly if you undo everything you might as well...remember to cover the intake ports so you dont drop your food, sweat, dirt etc in it

I have the same car and it's a PIA! The flat rate is around 3 hours and if I wasn't already putting a new transmission in I wouldn't have thought twice about taking it to a dealer just so I wouldn't have to deal with it. You also need a few swivel sockets to help accommodate the tight spaces. How many miles do you have on the ODO? These things are notorious for transmission issues around the 130k-180k.

I thought the Lexus was bad for having to take entire intake manifold off to get to the starter. Never heard of having to take an IM off of a car to get to the spark plugs. Crazy!!

Good luck with it!

I haven't had to do that yet and according to the alldata the steering wheel doesn't have to come off.

Well it went smoothly except I broke one of the intake bolts. the last guy to work on her car had it cranked on. There are 7 others so it runs ok for now but it broke off flat so I dont know how I am gonna get it out

From what I've seing, most FWD cars with V6 engines have this issue.
