Need opinions on computers - June 7, 2012, 07:27 PM

Ok, so as a couple of you know, my family's business burned up pretty bad a few weeks ago.

Despite fire, Byrd Tractor is open for business | InsideNova

This is what is left of my office

So long story short, the insurance company is giving me right around 1700 for my new computer.

I'm going to need the computer, monitor, and an all in one in that budget.

I don't really know what to go for.

I have a VAIO at home with an external monitor hooked up to it so I can watch movies or whatever I feel like on one and 'work' on the other.

I'd like to be able to do the same with a new setup.

Would it be easier to just get another laptop with an HDMI out and have two screens that way or should I do it using a tower with a gpu with dual outputs or whatever.

I don't know much about this stuff, so I need some help.

I will be mostly viewing blue prints and watching movies so the strain won't be too great on the machine.

I am too lazy to search for this stuff myself, google is weak with me tonight.

Suggest away, fuckers.

Built a new personal rig not to long ago and still going strong. Love the 10 second cold boot times with my SSD. Mostly used for gaming/media, its a tower. I've got a laptop with hdmi as well, but prefer the desktop. With $1700 you could actually build a decent tower and buy a decent laptop, and then have both.

Wow, I drive by that place 3 days a week on my way to work (I work at a tech support/networking/sales computer company) in Manassas. Sorry to hear about the explosion, apparently the damage isn't very noticeable from the front since I have yet to notice. If you want some guidance on a work ready computer i'm sure we could help you out. If you'd like, send me a PM and we can help you out.

If your computer doesn't need to travel anywhere, you can also buy an awesome tower for ~$500-$700 and a couple big screens, and have enough budget leftover for possibly a laser color all in one. Might be more computer than you need by the sound of it but better than most laptops at that price range and a better setup overall IMO.

I personally hate the current crop of laptop resolutions. 1600x900 approaches usefulness but that's automatically a $1000 laptop right there. 1920x1080 might be uncomfortable on anything less than a 17" laptop depending on your eyes but I love it on my 27". But any screen will do for watching movies, most the budget ones are 1366x768 now. Apple Macbooks use a 1280x800 or 1440x900 resolution which is very pleasant to look at.

Sorry to hear about your business.

If you're an average user then tech spec won't mean that much to you. You just need a 'reliable work horse'. Try going by a few stores and look at what they have - a screen that gives you the resolution you can stand to stare at all day, a keyboard that's comfortable for you, etc. Once you know what you want (and if you have the time) you should get a better price on line.

You can get something that should work just fine for between 400/800 or so depending on the features you want. Don't worry too much about disk size as you can (and probably should for business) store your files on a portable external drive.

Personally, I like Asus products. I use their motherboards in towers and have two of their laptops(not the high end). I paid about 300 for the EPC and 600 for a U56E. They have a very good record for reliability and since it's for business. . . .
