I've been using Affinity Computers in Herndon for several years (on Rt 606 about 1/2 mile east of Rt 28. They've consistently done good work for me, and their prices (parts and labor) have been lower that other places I've looked at. They charge for an initial checkout/analysis, but roll that into the cost if they repair it for you. I have a laptop there right now. 703 397-9451...talk to Bill or John.

Usually the initial lookover will cost you $90 and rolled into the cost to repair. Affinity Computers is a good place.

The charging port is usually soldered to the motherboard, it might be an easy fix. If it's not an easy fix then you need a new motherboard and the Laptop isn't worth it.

Is it the battery? It could easily be bad by now.
Is it your power plug? They tend to short out at the male fitment on the powerplug, you can splice them back together or buy a new one... does your plug get really hot?
Is the actual power connection in the laptop loose or displaced?

Is this Amy's old laptop? If so she needs the motherboard replaced. The motherboard is worth more than the laptop is...but you could always price one out. If you buy a new motherboard for it I can install it for you.

yah tested the battery and AC adapter. its none of those. I am fairly sure its the charging port.

It's most likely gonna cost right around the price of a new laptop so you guys are right I should just buy a new one. Anyone recommend anything? Just be used for work and crap. No gaming or porno-movie-editing. So i figure something around 500 bucks. i was thinking dell...

thanks for all your help.

dell surprisingly makes an ok laptop... DO NOT buy a laptop with the vista OS. Your pr0n will not work... The stuff that does will be hidden in unreachable folders.

Dell or the company Lenovo that makes IBM laptops now. Dell will be cheaper. You can buy a refurbished off the Dell website with warranty and all but sometimes the price is not that much better. Here is the link.

Lenovo or IBM can be more expensive but are very sturdy if you plan to carry it much. LInk for used IBMs http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...goryId=2576396
3-6 month warranty on used ones
