Need some help w/project - September 11, 2008, 08:47 AM

Ok,

I got to GMU and i'm in an engineering class. our task this semester is to build an amphibious vehicle that uses no gas/electricity to be powered and can't be larger than 18"x12"x12"

Cost/weight/speed/degree of slope which it can climb are all factors in out grade. So this is a begging post.

I need a couple of spring style mouse traps! (2-6)

if anyone is willing to donate one/some I'd be very grateful

Another option that may be easier to work with is a clock spring, especially if you can get an enclosed built one, but don't try opening it.

you can also try using a pneumatic engine and tank off an old air hogs toy or just a bunch of rubber bands twisted up or wrapped around an axle.

Sorry, I have no old style mousetraps.

I considered a clock spring but that is a bit harder to utilize for our purposes.
air tanks I have considered as well, and its still an option for one of our three designs.

All my teammates are about 3 years younger than myself, just coming out of HS they are familiar with the mouse trap method, so one design will focus around this particular power source. I've already been looking into a compound mouse trap design, as well as multiple trap design.

since its an amphibious vehicle, I'm largely going to be pushing for a catamaran style hull construction so very likely its an independent axle design as well

i love building shit

thanks for the interest mike

Idea. Make a plastic tank/boat using PVC. PVC is really strong and water tight. Us the body of the boat as a tank to hold compressed air. Use the compressed air to move the drive.

In one of my engineering classes I built a multiple mousetrap car with a 2 speed tranny...

It was a spectacularly epic failure, but damn it looked cool

Design Objective: The objective of the competition is to design and build a stored energy amphibious vehicle with the goal of beating other teams by minimizing the following objective function:

CFV = TP / DP + 90 / AL + WV / 4 + CV / 30

Where:
AL: is the maximum incline angle, in degrees, of a 10 foot beam that the vehicle can climb and still touch a barrier mounted to the end of the beam 10 feet away
TP: is the time, in seconds, between the start signal and the end of the water run
DP: is the max distance, in feet, traveled during the water run
Wv: is the total weight, in pounds, of the vehicle at the start of the competition
CV: is the total cost, in dollars, of the vehicle at the start of the competition

Rules:

• The class will be randomly divided into seven (7) teams with approximately the same number of students.
• Each team must fund their design efforts. Students may contribute up to (but no more than) $5.00 each. Receipts for ALL expenditures are required. The receipts will be the basis for itemizing all expenditures and donations “in kind” to determine the final cost of the vehicle.
• Each team may use, and indeed is encouraged to use, materials found, borrowed, or donated to the group from around the house, the university, the dorm, an outside company, or other entity. The team will be disqualified if items used in the design have been illegally acquired or if it is determined that public or private property has clearly been pilfered.
• The amphibian vehicle must be an original design using commercial off-the-shelf items and/or custom design elements developed by the team members.
• The amphibian vehicle must float. The interior must remain completely dry during pool trials and competition.
• The amphibian vehicle cannot be reconfigured for the aquatic and land competitions, i.e., the vehicle must be completely self-contained to allow it to move quickly between land and aquatic elements with absolutely no modifications.
• The amphibian vehicle must fit completely inside a prism measuring 12”H x 12”W x 18”L. Vehicles violating this rule will be disqualified.
• Propulsion or motive power may include rubber bands, balloons, springs, wind-up devices, bungee cords, steam, or by other means that do not rely on electricity or the combustion of gas, liquid, or solid.
• The following stored energy and motive power devices are prohibited:
o Flammable gas, liquids, or solids, i.e., gasoline, diesel, or other petroleum-based fuels.
o Internal combustion engines.
o Model rocket engines.
o CO2 cartridges.
o Batteries or electrical devices.
• Each team will be allowed 3 non-consecutive heats. The best score of the three heats will be retained. The team with the lowest value of CFV wins the competition.
• Each team may service their vehicles between heats. However, teams may not modify their design in any way between heats.
• Teams will not be allowed to touch their vehicles during the heat (from start signal until the end of the run). Violators will be disqualified.
• Vehicles may have moveable and/or extensible appendages. However, ALL parts of the vehicle must initially be within the prescribed prism at the start of the competition.

this class is way cooler than any of my engineering classes...

Compress air in PVC tube
nozzle end of tube
let it rip

rat trap has a much stronger spring. but why do you need these donated? you can buy 4 packs from home depot for 2 bucks... meeting someone would probably cost more in gas, and shipping would probably cost more too.

I don't want to BUY them because my grade will be lower if I do.

gas expense/travel to pick up said donation doesn't count

I'm still looking/begging for mouse traps!
If anyone has one please let me know!
