Looking for 2 person tent with covered 'porch' area for gear.

3 season is fine, must be okay for rain, preferably not an uber expensive unit.

Go to REI. They have a good selection of tents that pack small.

REI

Mine has never let me down. Never soaked through or collapsed in storms. Top vented fly cuts condensation. I prefer the REI to my North Face.

My kid has a Smith Mountain that seems nice, but he has yet to use it in any kind of weather. The Kelty Gunison Pro look nice as well and may be my next tent.

Visiting a REI store probably won't be the cheapest route, unless the Germans have mastered teleportation or REI has locations over the pond.

I'm sure they have their own outdoor stores, see what brands they carry. I've had REI, northface, and Coleman. They all been good. The Northface was the easiest to set up.

We've got a Marmot that's pretty good when two of us are going, but honestly if it's just me, I go with my ENO hammock and rain fly. It packs down a lot more, sets up quicker, and is more comfy.

Marmot Limelight 3 person tent. If mine ripped or tore I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Mine fell off my fz1 a couple years ago and REI replaced it for free since I was using REI straps that failed.

REI 100%.
All of their models are solid and squared away, especially the length of the flies. The vestibule option you're looking for is one thing they do very well too.

I've been skimming through the REI site, I like most of the tents I find but most that have gear storage are utilizing the rain cover, which is fine but I was hoping for a split tent that has a more sealed gear part.

We have Marmot stores here (along with Jack Wolfskin) so we'll take a walk over and see if they have any we like.

Looks like I might end up getting a larger tent for what we want and when we camp with the dogs, along with a smaller tent for when we're backpacking or trail riding.

This one looks sweet though huge:

Really like this NF 2-person which has a gear compartment:
