need your insight on next car choice - December 15, 2009, 12:47 PM

I have been torn on a whitch car to get. I have narrowed the search 2 these choices. I have never owned any of theses cars, so any insight on these cars will be apreciated. I am buying used. Next car will most likly be a manual trans and black or silver in color.
  1. Mini cooper (not s package im on a budget)
  2. Smartcar for 2
  3. scion xa
  4. yaris
  5. Civic EX 2door
I am looking for a commuter car that gets great gas milage thats not going to cost me an arm and a leg. These seem to fit into the criteria. Im not worried about top end or HP just reliability and gas milage.

Your thooughts people.

perhaps you should youtube the crash tests - u'd be surprised

outta the options for the OP - since it seems like you don't need a vehicle with room - civic hands down - it'll last you the longest

+1 to old skool Saturn - saw one today being towed with an Audi TT on the tow bed - Audi lost

If you don't get the S, don't get the Mini. the regular mini's are turds.

I'd go with the Mini. Even if not the S, it's still nicely appointed and is a bargain BMW if you want to look at it that way. You're getting the best value for dollar in my opinion. Not to mention, there's a ton of aftermarket support if you want to spice it up a bit or add ski-racks, nets, etc. etc.

- Smart Car is only good for city and light suburban commuting. Contrary to popular thought it's very crash worthy. The entire car has in integrated crash cage, so it's probably safer than your standard large crumple zone design.

- Civic is ok, but really, it's a Civic. Just another generic econo-box. It'll last, but it'll feel really rough and unrefined compared to the Mini.

- Scion. Nice Toyota sub-brands. I'd go with the Scion over the Yaris, only because Toyo is really trying to through more value features into Scions, whereas the Yaris is that "throwaway" model Toyota changes every 3-4 years. I think it used to be ECHO in it's price segment.

The Non-S model makes a perfectly good commuter car.

S just gets you the turbo, slight bump in displacement, and a retuned suspension.

NO NO NO..Do NOT buy a MINI. bought mine summer 2008, sold it feb 2009.

sooooo many problems with my car. i had it at the dealer about 7 times in less than a year to fix many problems.

goto: www.northamericanmotoring.com to read all the issues folks have.

Scion's look good. eg toyota

honda's will last you.

dont dont dont get the MINI

list of my issues.
cold start chatter (sounded like a diesal) they repaired it "twice"
windows stopped working
sunroof sticks when it gets hot out (85+)
3rd brake light fell from roof.
clutch was replaced at 5K miles

no joke.

I had a loner mini when my S was as at the dealership for one of the multiple manufacturer defects that it had and I thought I was going to DIE when I got out on rt 50... the little turdhearse just wouldn't go.

not to mention that the people you have to deal with at the mini dealerships are even worse than their BMW buddies (no offense to anyone that works at those dealerships --- but it was that typical BS of "we know you HAVE to come here so we don't care how we treat you").... that may be different now though.

HOWEVER ---- the resale value on the mini is insane. I got my 05 Cooper S in September 2004 for like 26k out the door and got 21k for it over 2 yrs later on TRADE IN.

No I can co-sign this! Jetta's TDis are like tanks. The engine doesn't even get really good and broken in until you hit 100K.
And you'll be lucky if you burn through a tank of gas in a week. Torque is better than any other 4 cyclinder you can find out there.

And again, it doesn't look or feel like a crap-econobox inside or out.
