Network timeout when trying to go to r1-forum - April 2, 2009, 08:46 PM

If I hop on VPN I can access the site, I throw my aircard into my laptop works fine. I've had this problem when I used to live in Ashburn also. I had comcast in Ashburn, and I have Cox in Falls Church. This was happening with the router that comcast provided and it is still happening with the Linkys router I am using.

I can proxy to it fine.

Tracert completes fine
I can ping fine

When searching my ip and domain name I get network timeout error.

While not connected via vpn do an nslookup on r1. My guess is your providers dns doesn't know about it.
When you vpn you get a different dns and it knows of r1.
If that's not it then it may be because comcasts routing information is incorrect on how to get to the ip address.
When you vpn it changes your routing information to go through your work provider.
I have this happen a lot with phone providers that can't dial my work numbers. Even my inter-tel technicians phone can't dial my desk he gets a busy signal (fast beep). His provider doesn't have the proper routing.

I think you have basically tried what I suggested and can tracert.
In this case it is the router itself. I use to not be able to get to www.comcast.net using my wireless router. Comcast said they had seen this from time to time with certain router and suggested I bypass it.
Strange stuff.

Probably multiple domains hosted on the same IP. The FZ6 forum is probably the default site so when you hit by IP it goes there. Hitting by name would direct to one or the other of the vhosts.

And R1 with the same ip is the one with the host header.

I doubt it's the router but you can try just going straight from the modem to the PC and see if it makes a difference.

It looks like it's ultimately your ISP. I do not envy the difficulty you'll have trying to get them to do anything about it.
