Exclamation New D.C. traffic cameras to monitor stop signs, pedestrian crosswalks - August 29, 2012, 02:14 PM

New D.C. traffic cameras to monitor stop signs, pedestrian crosswalks - The Washington Post

New D.C. traffic cameras to monitor stop signs, pedestrian crosswalks

new crop of traffic cameras is set to be installed in D.C. this fall. But instead of catching motorists who run red lights, these cameras will cite drivers who roll through stop signs.

WTOP reports that 16 to 24 traffic cameras will be installed at stop signs and intersections across the city before the end of the year.

The cameras are intended to generate tickets for drivers who don’t stop at stop signs, as well as those who block intersections and fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Overweight and overheight trucks will also be targeted.

Earlier this summer, a similar proposal was floated in the town of Glen Echo, where the mayor is asking state and county officials to amend laws to allow stop sign cameras. Currently, Maryland only allows red light and speed cameras.

There is no such prohibition in the District, where the fine for running a stop sign would be $50. The fine for blocking an intersection would be $100, while failing to yield to pedestrians would set drivers back $250.

The District’s network of existing traffic cameras generated $55.1 million in 2011 and is expected to bring in even more revenue in 2012, AAA reported in June. That same month, D.C. added 25 new speed camera locations.

Shenangins. Do you how hard it is to NOT occasionally block an intersection in D.C, especially during rush hour or when there's an accident? Or when a sporting event or conventions let's out. Or up and down any of the blocks in the nightlife areas (Adams is horrible in that regard)?

How many times, as you are progressing through a green light or intersection when suddenly traffic checks up and comes to a dead halt and you're left stranded in the middle or trunk end out.

Money making machine. Not only the profit from the cameras, but also all the cops that they will no longer need to employ to enforce laws.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw a cop in his car with the photo camera on the bumper....

It hit me that he will be free from traffic monitoring...then hit me again...
less cops needed all around.

Technically cops should hate this...being replaced by cameras.
It might not show now...but as officers leave/retire/transfer out...and no replacement comes...they will feel the gap.

I hope they continue to put cameras all over the f-ing place in DC. I moved out of the district to VA, and will soon be changing jobs so I will never have to drive into the district. My commute will be a whopping 5 minutes.

I'm laughing because I just had a thought, what if they do the same in VA??

Just reaffirms that DC has nothing to offer me. No reason to cross the sewer to go to the shitter.

132 new ticketing devices.

132? Really, is this the most pertinent concern for the residents of the District right now?
Better traffic enforcement and ticketing?

It is one of the most pertinent problems facing DC; how to get more money out of all the people using DC roads who don't pay DC taxes.

You know politicians. They always need more money.

Ding ding. We have a winner. Under the guise of "safety" they have created something that generates 55+ million dollars a year. Why wouldn't they want to expand that as much as possible.

Then again... That's just me.
