New "graphic" cigarette warnings unveiled - June 21, 2011, 08:28 AM

Personally I think this won't do a damn thing. If before these graphic photos didnt phase you, then why would you stop now? Because another friend of yours died or has/had complications now from cancer related smoking? Come on now...

Posting links so you guys know what I'm talking about. It's not that I think you are lazy. Honest.

New graphic cigarette warnings unveiled - The Washington Post

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

Beginning on Oct. 22, 2012, any cigarette makers that do not put the new warnings on their packaging will not be allowed to sell their brands in the United States. The warnings, which will replace those that cigarette packs began carrying 25 years ago, will cover half the front and back of each pack and 20 percent of each large ad.

Tobacco companies do not market to smokers, they already have you.

They market to non-smokers, specifically kids. Kids are there number one target market since they represent the only growth demographic for them. Maybe this will gross some kids out and have a few less start the habit.

Yeah, the entertainment (news) clip merely talks about how likely it is to make people QUIT smoking. It's not bound to make anyone quit, but it might help in preventing new smokers from taking up the habit to begin with. And it just might end up making my girl quit because she gets grossed out very easily and might have a hard time dealing with those images every time she picks up a pack.

I think this is taking it overboard. I feel like some sort of infringment on rights of a business is occuring with this...

...do they paste graphic images of auto accidents on cars?

I think this may set a precedent for "informing" consumers that we don't want any parts of. If I were a smoker, I'd probably not give a shit about the ads b/c most likely you already know the possible outcomes from smoking...sure it may make one ponder, but I can't remember the last time a graphic road rashed mangled body image made me want to stop riding...

nor can I remember if one prevented me from wanting to BEGIN riding. Usually, people process the risks involved. If they are okay with it then they pursue the activity regardless...often times people ignorantly pursue without fully processing the risks (think 18 yr old squid running from police).

Are these ads enough to overcome the latter individual's ill analysis of risk from engaging in smoking??? If not, then what's the point?

What do you value more? Life or Image?

@TalkOfDC...even though I'm against smoking and drinking and all that other stuff, I do agree with you that this infringes a lot on the companies. If the government wants to act within their powers they could increase the taxes on cigarettes. This is a bit over-reaching of a demand from the government. To be fair, they should also put similar images on the bottles or cups used at bars, showing the accidents caused by drunk driving. Or they could just declare them both as schedule one drugs and make marijuana legal and be done with the whole debate. After all, marijuana is both a lower health risk and a lower risk to others.

There are actually safe ways to use cars - most of them are used safely in our society. Same goes for bikes.

Please point out the safe examples of smoking in our society...

Now perhaps you see the need for the Surgeon General's office

^ I hope you didn't open a door that would derail this thread with the marijuana comment...lol...

But yes, correct. I forgot all about alcohol in my example. Bottles should be covered in paper mache of newspaper articles of drunk drive auto accidents!!!

If they plan to do this for smoking...

Ok...no safe way to smoke a cigarette? I'm not a smoker so I cannot really enlighten TOO much, BUT I would say what qualifies safe?

No other non-smokers being effected or affected by second hand smoke? Or do you mean the actual smoker not having a negative effect on their body? if the latter, what qualifies something as being safe for any one individual, if the person who receives the "unsafe" activity views it as safe, what gives?...

some people deem riding a motorcycle as UNsafe...doens't really mean that it is unsafe...only they view it to be.
