New Hobby - Kayaking - July 3, 2011, 06:02 PM

Just got back from our family vacation at TopSail Island. We rented kayaks for the week and used them in the ocean and sound. Was a complete blast, and has sparked a new hobby for me. I have been on the water most of my life and had kayak, canoe, small watercraft experience before but this week was a ton of fun.

With the rivers around here and the ocean so close (relatively) this seems like an ideal place to pick up the sport. So checking to see if any of you have any experience with kayaking in the area? Yes, I know this is not DC<insert random other noun>.net

Can some make me a mount for my bike, so I can tow a 16ft. 60ish lbs kayak, and go 2up?

I could give you some advice if you wanted to do some whitewater kayking, but sea kayaking not so much.

I go to topsail island once a year with all my family. aunts, uncles, cousins, everybody. There's normally around 30 of us and we get 3 beach front houses all next to eachother. It's a blast. I'm actually leaving next friday for the trip. We kayak from rogers bay all through the topsail sound to the bridge each year.

Fished out of Pohick park today and caught a bunch of fish, 5 different species. Out-fished everybody on Monday too with 5 different species.

Heading up Goose Creek tomorrow morning.

I've mentioned it before, I have two kayaks if anyone is interested in going along. I go fishing at least once a week, and usually Sat and Sun if it's not a track weekend.

I've seen some solutions for hauling a surfboard on a bike.. maybe this wouldn't be so different.

The gf has a couple 14ft kayaks and we go out pretty often on the Chester river (out in Kent Island), went out from gravely point by national airport once (water patrol guy was a DICK- make sure you have your whistle and boaters safety card along with the obvious life jacket).

There's lots of places to drop in around here, just keep in mind that if you are getting one to also account for a roof rack ( THULE makes nice racks that run about $400-500 for a single and $700-$850 for a double rack). Also make sure you remember to take weight and size of Kayak into consideration if going out mainly by yourself, so that tossing the boat onto the roof-rack is not a feat of it's own.

I actually just kayaked for my first time last weekend down at Smith Mountain Lake. I didn't cover a lot of distance, just paddled around the cove and fished a bunch of docks. Very cool though, I enjoyed it.

after this mornings trip (sorry for the confusion) I am buying a kayak and getting back into some fishing, was really fun and relaxing.

Would definately be down for doing this regularly with all the water around here.

Thanks Travis.

I'm going to fish Beaverdam reservoir early in the morning this weekend. Need to catch more like this one from Tuesday.
