New image gives insight into colliding galaxies - October 18, 2006, 11:27 PM

This always reminds me of how much of a grain of sand we are. Enjoy!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A seemingly violent collision of two galaxies is in fact a fertile marriage that has birthed billions of new stars, and an image released on Tuesday gives astronomers their best view yet.
The new image of the Antennae galaxies allows astronomers working with the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope to distinguish between new stars and the star clusters that form them. Most of these clusters, created in the collision of the two galaxies, will disperse within 10 million years but about 100 of the largest will grow into "globular clusters" -- large groups of stars found in many galaxies, including our own Milky Way.
The Antennae galaxies, 68 million light years from Earth, began to fuse 500 million years ago.
A light year is the distance light waves travel in one year -- about 6 trillion miles.
The image serves as a preview for the Milky Way's likely collision with the nearby Andromeda Galaxy, about 6 billion years from now.

God T, that's deep. I believe we're all supposed to be extinct in 2.5m years anyway so pity about that. That'd be some good camera footage..

interesting stuff

I'm more optimistic about our chances. We're pretty resourceful. And prolific. Some of us should outlive the 2.5M mark, dontcha think?

Hey did you get that image from Reuters. I have that in my email at work.
We work with NASA on that space stuff. Here is another one from Cassini.

This picture shows an unprecedented level of detail in Saturnís F ring. The perturbing effect of one or more small moonlets orbiting in or close to the ring's core could be responsible for the creation of structures like the one seen here.

Here is some more space pics.
NASA's newest orbiter, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, has now begun on-orbit operations with the most powerful camera ever sent to Mars. Here is a picture of Victoria crater taken by MRO and a blowup of the full resolution image (too big to send in an email) that shows the Opportunity rover, clearly recognizable at this resolution, near the lip of the crater.

Actually not true.

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure."

I am looking at it from a Nietzsche perspective

Ah I see what you meant now. Iíve read that quote before somewhere. Bit of an over simplification with a dark twist. Sci-Fi Channel much? Fascinating area of discussion but too time consuming for me on a forum like this. I might be down for ANN though (Anthropology Nerd Night)

the quote was used in Independence Day from "us" to the Alien when it was captured. I'd like to think that we're not like that, and that we've taken steps to appreciate our existence.

it's just another way at looking at our purpose here...

cool shots though. i was reading about the mars pictures on cnn.com earlier.

Oh thatís right, I heard the quote in a movie instead of reading it somewhere. So much media. So few brain cells.

+1 on the great photo. I actually subscribed to Sky & Telescope magazine a long time ago in a state far far away.
