I don't think this ad is very effective. It's too long, and it's not until the last few seconds that you have any idea what the fuck it is about.

They are certainly getting their money's worth with the ad, though. It hasn't even officially aired and it's all over the place.

I have to imagine the one tribe that is all up in arms about it wasn't paying for this ad and if they were there are a lot better things that they could be spending their money on. So many of these reservations are some of the worst crime and drug/alcohol addiction rates in the country. Is this really the biggest problem in their world right now?

At what point does the political correctness stop. A overwhelming small minority of people actually find the name offensive but most agree its used more nowadays as a term of honor. Maybe since I'm 1/4 Native American I should lobby to those dipshits in Congress to put out a Cowboys commercial as the term offends me due to them slaughtering my ancestors...you know....the Redskins... Complete horseshit...

They do actually call themselves Redskins. A number of reservation High School teams use the Redskin as their mascot/HS team name. Like 60.

I also am a 1/4 Native (Shinnecock), and while I'm not up in arms about the Redskins name, I can certainly see how it is NOT a term of honor.

I grew up in New York during the era of the Lou Carnesecca led St. John's Redmen, when the Redmen were one of the hottest tickets in town and Big East / NCAA perennials, and just about every kid who played ball in the 5-boroughs wanted to play for SJU and be a hometown hero.

I didn't see a problem with the name "Redmen" because I thought in my youthful ignorance, that as SJU was a Catholic University, the Redmen was a reference to the Red Robes Catholic Cardinals wear.

When I found out what the Redmen really referenced at first I shrugged it off, but I began to reflect and think about my since passed Grandfather, who was half Shinnecock Indian and took me out the Reservation several times as a kid, what would he say? I would have the dual embarrassment of being nullified into cheeky totems and pejorative slurs while essentially dissing my own people.

Not to banter on, but eventually SJU realized, yes, the name is inherently in poor taste and changed their named to the Redstorm in the 90's.

Was it necessary to leave decades of Redmen history in the past and change the name? That depends on how one values the dignity of others, if one truly respects the cultural identity of another ethnicity -vs- lip service about how they do, and where their social conscious lies.

But, I leave you with this quick item to consider:
If the Redmen (or Redskins) were named the St. John's Guinea's, Paddy's, or Hymie's, bet my last dollar that name wouldn't have lasted at any point past, say, 1950. The Italian, Irish, and Jewish community respectively would have demanded a change.
