Question New SUV recommendation, Help me Out - December 16, 2011, 02:38 PM

Thinking of getting one of the four SUVs
2010 Acura MDX
2011 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD
2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 4WD
2011 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD

These vehicles are different in there own ways yet its difficult to see one that comes on top for me.

Do not have much reqs. but to have a 3rd which these have and from what I know the reliability on the foreign cars are high.

Just curious if anyone could help sway my choice from one to another.

And yes I will test drive these this weekend

out of just that list i would put the money on the 4runner....not sure if you thought about nissan but the Xterras and pathfinders are really nice..or if you wantr to ball out of control and dont care about gas mileage the armadas are nice

Like the Ford Explorer and the Toyota 4Runner from that list... can't go wrong with either of them.

Had a 98 Explorer AWD with the V8, what a piece of crap. i'll never buy a ford product. leaky throttle bodies, electrical problems at about 105k miles and had to replace the damm breaks all the time.
acura are nice but not really a sturdy platform for hauling/towing.
4Runners are great but they are very old technology and should be getting a complete remake soon.
dodge durango and chevy blazers have reliability issues.

JW626 mentioned the Nissan. They were redone a couple/few years ago.
I'de go with a 4runner or the nissan imo.

Is this vehicle going to be purely grocery getting or will you eventually get the modification bug?

4runner was just redone in 2010. Nissan is not up the the quality of honda/toyota, and definitely not up to toyota's trucks imo. the 4 runner is gonna be more utility oriented then the pilot (truck frame, slightly better towing capacity). Depends on what you're looking for, I'd say that the pilot or even the cheaper toyota highlander would be a good choice for more people carrying duty (while still keeping some offroad and towing capacity). i went through this with a pickup, and now an suv. went toyota both times (tacoma and now 4runner).

We just bought a Pilot LX 4WD a couple of months ago. Comes with the tow package - can't tow too much, but will tow a trailer and a couple of bikes easy. We looked at the new Highlanders, CRVs, FJ Cruisers, and RAV4. I had a hook up with Nissans and Hondas - but didn't bother to look at the Nissans.
FJ was surprisingly smooth, but not a family car. RAV4 felt very cheap - like a Corolla in 4WD. The Highlander was very nice, but the dealer wasn't budging too much (it was the most expensive out of the bunch, with the Pilot). The Highlander also felt the most boring, the most smooth - you should test drive them. Reminded me of my old Lexus. If I went with the CRV, it would have been the brand new ones that haven't showed up on the floors yet.
In the end, the Pilot was the choice for us, and I'm glad that we did...I averaged over 24mpg going down to Richmond the other weekend, and was a Honda fanboy in my younger days.
We also test drove the Accord and Accord Crosstour. Both were very nice as well.
