Exclamation New Virus Warning! Hard Drive in Danger! - June 10, 2008, 09:07 PM

Sorry if this has already been posted, but it's an hour past my bedtime and I wanted to share the word.

I checked it out, it appears to be a totally legit warning - it is on Snopes.
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp
Subject: Virus warning

BEWARE!

In case you haven't heard this yet.

BIG virus coming

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus! I checked snopes.com, this morning, and it is for real!!

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS! You should be alert during the next several weeks. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who sent it to you.

It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc (C drive) of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it. If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.! This includes all cards, too. Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was
discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where your vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

Keep reading on Snopes to the end, and you will see:

If you look on snopes you can see a list of all the subjects that the virus uses, but its probably not limited to that. I had a couple people at work lanuch this "postcard" virus and symantec caught and cleaned it.

If it hasn't come yet, then wouldn't they just change the name from "POSTCARD" to something else?

Software cannot physically damage your hardware unless it overclocks it somehow...which then can only be your CPU and graphics card....and that won't likely happen because the virus would need to know your specific components and locations to do anything. I mean, it's possible someone could go through the trouble of coding a virus that could determine that information and such....but unlikely. And if you're dumb enough to download an attachment in a generic email from a friend (or worse, someone you don't recognize)...well.....you kinda deserve it.
