Red face Nice, knife to a gun fight! - June 19, 2007, 02:09 AM

FALLING WATERS, WV - An armed robber walks into a Berkeley County pizza shop and gets much more than he bargained for. After being held up at gunpoint, employees were forced to fight back in self-defense.

An armed robber strolls into Paesano's Pizza Shop, waving a gun and demanding money. He had no idea what he was in for.

"When he held the gun to my head, the side of my head was cocked down like this, and I grabbed the gun from his hand. I grabbed him and threw him back toward the refrigerator,” says cook Anthony Trinh.

After seeing the robber struggle with the cook, the manager grabbed the biggest knife he could find.

"I started chopping at the guy to get him away, to get him off my cook,” says manager Eugen Schiriac.

He was thinking of his wife, who was also there working.

"Immediately, I thought, ‘Me and her are going to be dead. We have children. We're going to die right here’,” he says.

Later, employees found out the robber's gun had jammed.

“There has to be a Jesus right now, because if there wasn't a Jesus, I wouldn't be here right now. None of us would be here right now,” says Trinh.

When the gun was no longer in the suspect's hand, the store manager grabbed him by the ankles and dragged him outside.

The suspect ran down the road and authorities found him in this area near broad lane. It wasn't until then that they realized he had cuts on his forehead, back and leg.

“I was thinking, ‘This is not a good way to spend Father's Day,' you know? I was thinking, ‘I haven't seen my daughter. I haven't told her I love her’,” says Trinh.

The suspect, DeWayne McGregor of Norfolk, left with no cash. He's now in good condition at City Hospital in Martinsburg. He will be charged with armed robbery and assault.

Investigators tell NBC25 they don't anticipate that any charges will be filed against the store owner.
