Nike cuts ties with boxer Manny Pacquiao after homophobic rant - February 17, 2016, 08:02 PM

Nike cuts ties with boxer Manny Pacquiao after homophobic rant | MSNBC

In what may be a first in the world of sports, a high-profile athlete has lost a major endorsement deal after expressing anti-gay rhetoric.
Nike has officially cut ties with boxer Manny Pacquiao, after the welterweight said gay couples “are worse than animals” in a TV interview in his native Philippines. “Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals,” he said. Although Pacquiao later apologized for his remarks and claimed he was not “condemning anyone,” it appears that the damage to his reputation was already done.
“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comment abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community,” a Nike spokesperson told MSNBC in a statement on Wednesday. “We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Here are the offending statements by Pacquiao:

"It's common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female? The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals."

The very first link I clicked in trying to find exactly what he said misquoted him, of course. Condemn away, but at least know what you are condemning.

We are animals. Knowing you are male or female has little to do with sexual orientation. I don't think what he said was homophobic. I think what he said was profoundly stupid.

The problem that conservatives run into on debates over this thing is that they (we) try to argue a case that depends on the assumption that there is an objective morality that includes the notion that everything was created for a purpose and that what is done according to that purpose is righteous, whereas what is done in violation of that purpose is unrighteous. But the pro-homosexuality side doesn't make that assumption so, as far as they can tell, there is on reason for thinking that homosexuality is a violation of anything. What Pacquiao tried to do--and many before him have tried also--is to appeal to natural design. But it's not a foundation for moral conduct. Gays know what they need to do in order to create offspring. They don't see that as a necessary part of their sexual expression.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. The debate was lost when the doctrine of purpose debate was lost many years ago. It's like the enemy is already inside of the gates, and it's only a matter of time before the city is taken. There's no more question of if. Representatives of the conservative viewpoint, based on the notion of a divine authority that assigned purposes to life, blew it when they let a few people begin convincing others that there is no such authority. Now were just haggling over souls and their eternal destinies.

Pacquiao didn't do his homework and deserves to lose endorsements as a result.

Gender has nothing to do with gender relationships. Amazing. It's amazing that you can convince yourself that this is worth uttering.

That's not a problem of conservatives. That's a problem of conservatives who hold on to a very strict biblical world view.

He said nothing untrue nor homophobic.
