Nissan Leaf! NO GAS REQUIRED! - March 16, 2011, 08:58 AM

I received an invite from Darcars Nissan to check out the new Nissan Leaf the other day. I was very impressed!

The Leaf is not much to look at but makes up for it in the fact that
you will never have to visit a gas station ever .
It goes for 100 miles on a single charge and its responsive when you hit the accelerator (yes i did open it up a little!)

You simply recharge this car like a cell phone everynight.
currently its only convenient for home owners w/ a garage but Nissan is working to change that down the road..

IMO Nissan just shit on the Toyota Prius....

100 mile range in ideal temperature and driving conditions most likely. Normal day-to-day is probably more in the 75-80 mile range, still more than enough for 95% of our daily and weekend needs. MSRP?

The styling is ass though. It reminds me of that goofy French SUV. I think it was a Renault (go figure). Why can't manufacturers make an electric car that doesn't look like a frickin' dork mobile. They spend billions developing styling centers and go through several rounds of styling submissions before selecting a final design and this is the best they come up with? Another egg head mobile. I swear the styling alone partially contributes to the rejection of adoption. I hear people say, "I don't want to be seen in that thing."

On the flipside, look at what Tesla did with the Model S. They commissioned the designer behind the Aston Martin DB9 to sketch the industrial design and based on the packaging alone, people cannot wait for the car to come out and are throwing money at Tesla trying to get a production slot.

And where is BMW? They reignited the small car category when they released the Mini brand. I am surprised they have not created a mild hybrid or all electric model.

Plug in cars are great. Now just to see how much cash they will save you... figure out how much you spend on gas every month... then every day for 30 days, go home, and run your clothes dryer for 8 hours straight on high. Now after 30 days put your electric bill next to your gas bill. Let me know how that turns out.

Unless they start building quick charge stations away from home I don't see how this is going to pan out well.

You know how many times I've been away from home and my cell phone dies....I can manage a phone dying....but it's not like i've ever run out of gas. I've been far out places that I had a scare of running out of gas. It's never actually happened.

...If people start running out of battery on the road...then what??? Because you KNOW there will be some ignoranat people thinking...I SHOULD BE GOOD (knowing the last time they charged their damn car was 98miles ago and they want to make a quick run for beer or some shit)...

catastrophic.

They made 250 all electric mini's I believe, and have had them out testing for over a year now.

Depends on time. I pay 8 cents per kilowatt hour during peak, and I think 6 cents off peak.

A gallon of gas costs me $3.30 and takes me 24 miles.
Enough juice to take me 20 miles costs me about .70 cents.

Expect electricity to go up... especially now that all the super efficient next-gen nuke reactors probably won't happen now...

I would drive an all electric CLS or CL in a heartbeat.
A Viper, well, that car's styling was built around the need to house a long block 10 cylinder truck engine in the front of the car. The whole design ethos would be different if it were an electric.
