Nope - No Oil Here. Everything's Fine. Nothing To See. - September 18, 2010, 04:39 PM

2nd and 3rd massive fish kills found in LA.

Quote:
Officials in Plaquemines Parish are reporting a fish kill in Bayou Robinson – the third such fish kill in the parish in recent days.

P. J. Hahn, director for the Coastal Zone Management Department, took photos of another large fish kill in the waters of Plaquemines Parish.

The previous fish kills were reported in Bay Chaland and Bay Joe Wise and were predominantly menhaden, also called pogie.

The Bay Chaland fish kill was discovered on Sept. 10 and the Bay Joe Wise fish kill was discovered by officials Thursday.

“Hahn said Thursday that the fish (in Bay Joe Wise) covered at least one-fourth of a square mile, with oil visible among them. He said he wanted the area tested because it was affected by oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill,” said a report from the Associated Press.

In addition to hundreds of thousands of dead fish floating west of the Mississippi River in Bayou Chaland, several days before, a large starfish kill was found in nearby Barataria Bay, and a dead baby whale was discovered near Venice a few days later.

So far, none of the fish kills have been connected to oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon or the oil disperant used in fighting the oil spill.

A day after reported, Randy Pausina, assistant secretary for the Office of Fisheries in the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, said biologists went to check the fish kill at Bay Joe Wise on Friday and expected to find the cause to be similar to Bay Chaland, low oxygen caused by high temperatures in shallow water.

“‘The hotter the water is, the less oxygen the water can hold,’ Pausina said. Heat also speeds up plant and animal metabolism, so they need more oxygen. Fish trapped in shallow water use up its oxygen and suffocate,” said a report from the Associated Press.

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

Awful and gross, yes, but not uncommon. Certainly not an indication that the end is near, etc. Could have happened even if oil wasn't involved, and frequently does happen.

The oil probably didn't kill them, but it definitely caused them to move into the shallows. Sad.

Fish kills happened a few times on lake isabella when I was growing up. Ridiculous how many of em were floating on top in some of the shallow bays.

What irritates me about this whole thing is the lack of change it's spurring.

No one's going to demand the oil companies change their ways and take safety more seriously. Personally, I think relief wells should be a requirement, not something you do only after catastrophe strikes.

Imagine how quickly this would have been over if the relief well had already been in place?

How about if people stop driving their fucking cars everywhere?

I'd like to see those dead fish gathered up and airlifted to Tyson's Corner. Dump the filth right on those malls and shut those MFers down.

Capitalism is a spectrum. I am a conservative capitalist. I don't believe the excess and extravagance that people in this country in general and people in NoVa in particular are indulging in is sustainable, and the evidence overwhelmingly supports my position.

FYI: I ride my SMC to work, rain, sleet, snow, 50+mpg. When the road conditions prohibit it, I sedate myself and hop on the metro at Glenmont. I can't remember the last time I drove my car to work except for a time here or there on the weekend when parking is available.

If people would just be conscious of and try to reduce their casual driving, things would be a lot different in this otherwise awful, God-forsaken part of the Nation.

Wait a minute. You're into '80s V8 muscle cars, and you're asking me how I get back and forth to work?

Sorry, couldn't resist. I used to tinker with a '70 chevelle years ago, got like what, maybe 5 mpg? If I put my foot into it I think the number actually went negative, like a virtual backwards travel in time to when the gas hadn't been distilled yet, like it never existed.
