Official Photography Thread - January 6, 2010, 02:44 PM

It seems there are a lot of Photogs on the site and even more that are interested in Photography. I know that there are some very talented and knowledgeable people on here that help other out with question.

So in order to keep the multiple threads about Cameras and Other Photography related stuff down and not take away from the bike thread. I figured we can try to post everything up in this thread.

Post up what you know and what you got.

I have a XTI 10.1mp

Nothing special right now for Glass but I am looking into stuff.

I also carry a Canon SD770 point and shot. Great little camera

We were talking about lenses in another thread and thats what prompted me to start this one.

I was looking at getting a 85mm 1.8 but think I might try the 50mm 1.8 since it is much much cheaper

dammit, just get the 50mm f/1.8 - since your camera isn't full frame it translates to 80mm f/1.8

Can't believe the Coolpix has the "sport" feature so its like rapid-fire pic taking. Not as fast as that noice cam Scorpion9R has but suprising to say the least.

Very true. Its about 1.5X stated. I just returned the Nikor 50mm 1.8 ($159!!) for a Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime. The 1.8 was the best bang for the buck but it wasn't AF compatible with the D60 Also, in close quarters you have to move back in many situations to capture conversational frames etc... Its always easy to move closer but hard to move away in close quarters due to shit getting in your way so I went with the 30mm 1.4 which was three times the cost but it is soooo freaking sexy and still cheap for what it allows for you to do... Oh and the 30mm translates to about a true 45mm on the Sigmas.
Big Sexy is big money with all the prime lenses.

Gem, I'm learning to do more with less, my 50mm f/1.4 is all but retired now that I have the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S, I would suggest looking into it - there is a lot less issues moving back now and its only $200. Sure the 50mm f/1.4 is very sharp, so all I use it for is low light and portraits.

I was thinking about going with a 24 or 28mm prime but the 35mm won out and I take 80% of my shots with it. I'm also saving up for a 10-24mm, I've been experimenting with my 18mm on the kit that came with the camera and I'm liking the ultra-wide stuff.

Here is my setup
DSLR:
Nikon D40 w/18-55 lens
Nikkor 35mm f/1.8(used most often)
Nikkor 70-300mm
Nikkor 50 f/1.4
SB400

P&S
Canon SD960IS

P&S Underwater
Canon SD700IS

My dream team would be:
Nikon D90 w/18-55 lens
Nikon 35mm f/1.8(used most often)
Nikon 70-300mm VRII
Nikon 10-24mm f/3.4-4.5G
SB400

and I would use the D40 for underwater - but damn the Underwater casing costing 1,300$

Right now...

D60
50mm 1.4
28-75 Tamron 2.8
70-200 2.8 Nikon
SB-600

Looking to upgrade to the D300 on the cheap since the D300S recently released. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. I do like the D60 though, very small and a great travel camera. Match that with an 18-200...great for vacations.

Next on the list...
TCE-17E
Sigma 150-500 so I can shoot wildlife
Hakuba Carbon Fiber Tripod

I need more time to shoot, hopefully this year I can get out more.

Just bought a Sony a230 a month ago.I've been meaning to buy a book on SLR's because I don't understand aperture and exposure and all that other stuff.Cool thing about it is that I can use lenses going back to 1985.

ALL MY HEROES ARE RUSSIAN...GO CAPS!

Well you see, Norm, its like thisA herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.-Cliff Claven
