Opinion on Domains - November 30, 2018, 12:36 PM

Let's say you found the perfect domain name for your new business but the .com domain was already taken and they have no interest in selling. As a consumer, would you find .net or .us to be more professional?

I don't want to get into the less common .biz, .info, or any of the thousand other ones. I want to keep it as common and professional as possible.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't see an issue with .net.

Not sure I'd want a domain name where .com is already taken, it may direct some of your traffic their way.

Normally you'd want to take .com and .net.

Maybe it's in my head but I feel like .net is less desirable than .us. Am I wrong that that's the perception?

Agreed that .com would be ideal but it won't be the same kind of business so visitors will know right away they're in the wrong place.

.net seems more professional to me than a .country, but I have no justification for why that is.

.porn

You'll get so many hits!

FWIW, I have no problem with .biz or .net

.info also makes me think I'm going to a Non-profit.

.us makes think "could be a sketchy scam site" thanks to every PayPal and EBay scam always pointing to a .us imitation site.

I have had quite a bit of domains, I manage a dozen or so personally and then a good amount for my main company. I have found time and time again that .coms are the only real recognized domain extention. When I get offers on buying domains, it has always been on the .com version. Sure people want to own the rest, but the website is always rooted on the .com.

Personally If i couldn't get the .com Id move along to another idea.
If it was a nonprofit, a .org is accepatable too... but .nets really seem to default to the back-end IT websites, and people that couldn't get the .com

A word or acronym .com is always the best. And if someone else already has it... and is established, your really going to fighting against their traffic.

Personally if I couldn't get the .com id go .co before going .net or .us.
.com
.org (only if non profit or something of similar nature)

.co
.us
.net

And from there on out I wouldn't use any of the newer 300+ extentions.... its just better to find another name or use a buying service to get the one you want.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I've significantly increased my offer to buy the .com so we'll see what happens.

I could do another domain name but the name I picked out is a marketing dream which is why I was hoping to stick with it.
