opinions on the new MacBooks? - June 16, 2012, 10:21 AM

SO, new MacBook laptops are out..
They did away with the 17" model completely and now have this new 15" Retina Display model. They still have the older style 13 and 15"s available..

Anyway.. It really bothers me that the new RD15" is NOT UPGRADABLE.. Memory is soldered on the MB and disk is a proprietary SSD design. A top line laptop is NOT a toy and they are EXPENSIVE. What has made it ok with me in the past that that I WAS able to upgrade my machine's memory and storage. This really pisses me off.. I am also afraid that this is "things to come". For now they still have the older style 15" available, but what about the next set of laptops? Goodbye forever, upgradability?

The standard style 15" looks nice. still has DVD and everything you would expect and you can get the same processors for it as the RD models..

anyway.. just venting..
opinions?

Interesting, I was looking at another laptop the other day that had 4 GB built in to the motherboard or something, with an expansion slot to add more. Is this a new thing?

Still, 8 GB is plenty. 16 GB is just ridiculous.

Nobody seems to realize that apple is entirely about no upgrade ability they are a status symbol like Bentley. Don't fiddle with it, you're not allowed to but we'll bring out a newer more expensive model that has what this one should of had but we'll take out a part to keep you wanting the next one. Their whole business model is so anti consumer it's ridiculous.

8gig gets pretty thin when you start bringing up multiple VMs and JAVA pigs like Netbeans..

eg.. right now.. I don't even have Netbeans running yet and my 8gig box only has about 180 MB free...

ya, I think they want to turn the PC's into "devices".. You buy it as is and throw it away for the newer, better model a year or two later.. And sure, that is tolerable with something costing a few hundred.. but almost 3k??? NO FUCKING WAY !!!!!

I give it a week after they acually ship for someone to have a video up showing you how to get around most of this crap.

I just got a new MBP and love this thing. Gotta say though, I do prefer that I can run up to Micro Center, pick up some Ram and upgrade it myself. One of my few ongoing beefs with Apple is that if you buy ram from them it is like 3 to 4 times more expensive than if I just buy it myself.

My previous MBP I added Ram and changed out the hard drive and used the old Hard Drive as an external drive. Got a good 6 and a half years out of it that way before upgrading to my new a few weeks back.

I think Apple is heralding the way most manufacturers are going to go. Make it so you cannot upgrade much and end up buying a new machine.

Yes, they don't want you working on it.

However, When you're buying this high end of a laptop, you don't need to. 8g will be plenty for the next several years, so will every other bit of technology on the new macbook. You don't really need to fuck with anything, ever. MAYBE a battery

So I've dismissed any anger about not being able to work on it. I've been using the macbook pro line since 2008, upgrading at all the major refreshes. They're very powerful and I've been really happy. This new one will be a considerable change for me and I'm really excited to get to an ssd drive, should be really snappy.

I can deal with having to buy an external dvd rw and an ethernet adapter. Keep in mind, with apple you're always paying hundreds more just for having a mac. Personally I prefer the operating system and I find the hardware to be nearly flawless. I calculated it once when my sis wanted a 13" pro, she would be paying $300 over the other laptops with all the same specs etc

Mine hasn't shipped yet but I can't facking wait to see the new retina display

$3,500 is too expensive for a laptop.

I'm also not a fan of anything Apple or Sony. All they do is setup roadblocks via proprietary software/codecs and proprietary hardware - all of it overpriced.

That's for the most expensive one possible.

You can get one for almost half that

only good thing i can see about Macbook is if you want to use Itunes... since itunes is a hog on any system that is non-apple

Just got me thinking... I don't do any dev or VM stuff, but I thought the whole idea behind lots of RAM was to reduce/prevent slowdowns from HDD swapping. With SSD it may be fast enough to not matter?

Fuck if I know though, lol.

That's a good point Rail (I think?).

Also, it seems to me that all the SSDs on the market right now are crap and have a very good chance of failure in about 6-12 months. Bad reviews on each and every one of them.

Maybe I'm not looking at Apple reviews, but their SSD setup seems to be a lot more reliable.

I've done a lot of dev work on my current macbook. apache with eclipse and some stand alone apps at once, never had an issue

I wouldn't want to run more than one VM on a laptop anyway

Your right about one thing.....the complaint most people throw out there about hwo expensive an apple is usually falls by the wayside if you try to configure another laptop to comparable specs. At that point the difference in price becomes tiny. That in mind I will stick with Apple.
