Opinions: Used Golf or Used Mini - April 22, 2011, 01:02 PM

Cousin is getting back on her feet after a long spate of unemployment.
I'm considering helping her out a bit by chipping in to get her a station car. (Those from up North know what I mean).
I know whatever it is, it's going to be a hatch back, small, and fuel efficient.
She's keen on a Mini but I know there are few Mini owners on here and some have reported bad experiences with the early Gen 1's from what I understand.

I'm trying to steer her in the direction of the Golf.
Anyone have any feedback on the Golf or the later model Mini's.

Friend of mine has a mini, he has to wait a month sometimes just to get it serviced. I have a VW, love it, been a great car, BUT the parts for it are way more expensive than Japanese cars. Just a little more to think about.

Both have electrical issues. I sold mine after 10 months of owning a new MINI due to being at the dealer so often. Jetta's and Golf's have had bad reputation for a long time...

I say a mazda3 hatch is the way to go.

Wow. That's surprising. I thought the Golf was the bread & butter model for VW so there would be plenty of inexpensive parts of the market considering they're shared with the Jetta.

Mini (BMW) or Golf (VW) the parts are going to be a bit more expensive than the Japanese cars (not tons more but a bit more). I am prejudiced though, I have a VW GTI so I got mad VDub love.

Does she plan on EVER putting anyone in the back seat? If she does then no Mini. That was literally what pushed me away from getting a Mini. Yes I know about the clubman and the other iterations......not real Mini's to me.

Tell her to get the VDub. DIY maintenance on them is not hard so you can help her save money by hooking her up with free maintenance. With the mini, you better have some straight up Hobbit'ass Oompa Loompa hands to get in there.

VEEEDUB 100% Parts are not expensive if you know where to look.. The 2.0 motors are cake to work on.. so are the 1.8t's. I've owned nothing but vw/audi my whole life and have never had big problems besides my mk3 flaming up.. but i'm sure that had something to do with my wiring somewhere behind the dash.

You won't go wrong with the golf. Solid car and plenty of space. rear seats fold down so that adds even more space.

^^What he said. I do all the maintenance on my 1.8. Parts aren't that expensive either and there's plenty of online vendors selling parts for VW's.
