Question Paint or plastic coat Jet Ski ??? - August 5, 2014, 12:20 AM

So long story short....I was suppose to check out an older Jet ski...the guy rattle can painted it. In the picture it looks pretty good but im sure that shit will peel off fast. I was just wondering what can I do to possibly repaint it?

I thought about Plasic coating it, but that may peal off also.

His picture is pretty small...anyone painted there water toys?

what stock looks like...

What his rattle can job look like...he replaced the seat cover...

Neither. Marine gel coat is the only thing that is going to be robust enough to endure the environment and abuse a water craft is going to see.

Million dollar Yachts get painted, airplanes get painted, just not with a rattle can as a rule...

Paint is fine if the quality of the prep and paint used is up to the task. Will it show scratches from a distance quicker if the paint is a different color than the underlying gel coat? Absolutely. If the same color is used it's fine.

Lots of grip, and weigh a ton. A floating brick.

None of the painted areas are gel coat. I don't know a lot about jet skis, but I do know that only the hull is gel coat, everything above the rub rail is typically just painted abs plastic.

yeah most is plastic...I have one jet ski now that is plastic..but the color is impregnated?

what is line X....Im on the fence about getting this ski....it has everything I want...not too scared of the twin carbs only working with the throttle pulled out...but did not want to sink so much money in it that i could have gotten a better one...

i think the rubber rails will peal tho...at the very least...if it is like my brothers..

The old plastic and rubber on these boats have good grip from the sun abuse...some good cleaner might help...but i dont know...

what do you guys think?

SO I drove up to Ocean City after work...turn and burn....2 hours 40 min drive.
The Jet ski is not all that dude said it was....
long story short...I was going to roll out and leave it but I hit him with a dirty low ball...He took it and I rolled out.

Its ugly...but that can be fixed...
Carbs and gunked up but runs...and the reverse cable is rusted and dont work ($40)

I have a shit hole body shop that should be able to paint this for me and load it up with clear coat.
I cant pain in my hood no more...sigh..or id paint it myself.

This is way bigger than my 1997....same engine but 1 carb vs. 2 carbs

just wish I had some of these new ones tho.....
