Paris / Middleburg / Upperville, VA :: What's There To Do Around Here? - October 26, 2016, 10:51 AM

GF said she felt burnt out and impulse booked a surprise getaway with AirBNB at some forest cottage.

Looks like I'll be in the woods all weekend - which she knows I don't exactly like doing unless there are plenty of activities or purpose driven (hunting, fishing), but she loves because she can read books, and do Yoga with the sunrise, count the leaves, talk to the trees and get back in tune with nature or whatever the hell.

So she'll pay at night for boring me ...

In the meantime what's there to do around here; I don't want to be sitting in a cottage all weekend?

Good place to eat? Winery or Distillery tour maybe? I heard that part of VA has a burgeoning alcohol production industry.

The food at The Red Fox Inn and Tavern in Middleburg was good. We grabbed drinks at a place a short walk away after, but I don't remember the name now. Things close pretty early there.

You hit the nail on the head with distilleries, wineries, and breweries. Fishing also.

Stone Tower winery is amazing, both the wine and the location/tasting rooms.

You'll be right in the middle of VA's wine country. I can't recommend any as I haven't been but my friends like:
Naked Mountain
Boxwood
Barrel Oak (which will be making craft beer soon, too)

In Middleburg, there's a cidery on Main St. Forget the name of it but I think it's towards the west end of town.

If you go just north on 15 from the 50/15 interchange, there's Quattro Goomba's. Winery in one building, brewery in the other.

And then, of course, all the freaking breweries in Loudoun County... just too many to list.

ETA: There's also Catoctin Distilling. Another friend of mine went there and she got a flight of mixed drinks while he sampled the actual distilled spirits.

Thanks for the leads everyone. I'll have some stuff to start reviewing over the next few days.

One more suggestion - take The Plains Road (Rte 626) from Middleburg to ... wait for it ... The Plains. About 8 miles, gorgeous drive, and The Plains is a cute little town with some great restaurants. Try Girasole or The Rail Stop. You could also stop at Boxwood Estate Winery, about a mile or so outside of Middleburg on 626.
