PBS NOVA 4-Part Special - Making Stuff f/David Pogue - January 15, 2011, 05:55 PM

This arouses the science geek in me. Looking forward to it.

Episodes will also be available for free on Iphone/Ipad w/the new PBS app.
PBS for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Who here remembers when Beyond 2000 used to come on FOX? Too bad we don't get shows like this anymore.

Cool show... Nova usually does a great job. It doesn't feel as fluffy as Discovery, etc.

I hope they profile D3o material....

I remember reading about this stuff about 4 years ago. Apparently (if I'm not mistaken) if was developed by a snowboarder who wanted did not want to wear a helmet and pads, but wanted more protection from the "cool" snowboarding clothes he was wearing.

On the molecular level, the way it works is that the bonds between the polymer when moved slowly can squeeze past one another and the stuff stays mallable, but when moved quickly (like during a hit or shock) the bonds can't move fast enough and link up becoming firm.

Are you calling a show about a group of disaffected Gen Xers who do little more than dig in the dirt and sissy fight fluffy?

They just did a 10 minute sampler on CBS Sunday Morning. Wait until you see the piece on Spider Silk, its strength, how the US Military would like to use it for carrier on arresting cables - and what one scientist is doing to produce it synthetically.

I'm interested to know if that last material can be used for stiching motorcycle leathers...

Why? Proper stitching is rarely a point of failure on leathers.

Plus, if it's as strong as steel, it may heat up like steel, and you can end up with severe burns under your untorn leathers.

OHhhhhhkkkkkaaaaaaaayyyyy...

Pieces of leather are stong. when put togetehr the make a jacket, pants or suit. In order to put them together they are sewn...which is the weakest point of any peice of leather...the seams.

second just b/c something IS as stong AS steel doesn't mean it holds the same properties AS steel in terms of heat conductivity....

I don't know if you are just Fing with me or being serious about that part...I think you were serious about the first part and just being sporadiac with the second part...

On now. they're f/Killacycle and talking about electrically powered vehicles.

Also discussing A123 batteries and Li-Ion power sources.

Should be a good episode.

Wow! Your average car racing tire has about 1-barrel of oil in it!
Crazy. Never knew this. Now I understand why they cost so much.
