Is a Coasty and is alive and well. He lives near New Orleans. His house is still there and unfettered and dry. Pokey finally heard from him yesterday.
Boy do he have storys about how bad the press made things worse.

Pokey needless to say is much relived.

I spoke to my bro last nyt. He was at an NAS in Mississippi. Katrina was C2 when it passed there and the base lost power. Once up, they had "hundreds" of tractor trailers with food & supplies ready to go. There were howerver, several other problems.

No gas within 7 hours of the coast due to usage during the evacuation.
No people to drive the trucks.

Later they had a bunch of people that could not be sent.

Impassable roads, no gas.
No garuntee of the rescuers safety.
ie: food, shelter & health of the rescuers. Never mind people shooting people.

No cell phone towers. Yes, even the Coasties are at least somewhat dependent on cell phones. Most rescuers would have been using Cells.
Tractor trailers could not get through the road debris or broken bridges.

If New Orleans used all the busses to evacuate everyone every time there was a Cane, then ALL the citizens would be used to hearing the city cry wolf. Not to mention the lack of $$ to do so.

One of his last thoughts as a N.O. citizen; If those people really thought it would have been that bad, they would have all left. None of them thought for one second that it would be like this.

His list went on & on. A rescue mission cannot proceed if it is doomed to fail. Take the time to make sure it does not.
Basically he let me know that most of the time taken was due to the fact that " They call it a disaster for a reason, you can't imagine what is going on here. It just takes time."

Has anyone else heard this one?:
The White house calle Louisianna the moment they found out Kat had grown & changed course for N.O. and asked for the Governor to declare a state of emergency before the storm hit so response time would be quicker.

I'll talk to him again soon & let you know what else I wheedle out of him.

Does anyone else have family in the affected region?

His family will be in Tenessee. They have been fortunate enough to recieve free tuition to a local Catholic Schlool. Her family has not only gotten them a place to stay, but fed & CLOTHED their children. She recieves all kinds of help from people just like you & me.

There are two families that I have heard of right here in the Manassas area recieving the same kind of treatment.
