Thumbs up Police To Add Rumbling Sirens To Cruisers - October 29, 2007, 08:44 AM

WASHINGTON -- Police cars in Washington and Alexandria are using a new technology to make sure people on the roads cannot only hear them coming, but feel a rumbling approach, too.
Forty-nine D.C. police cars are already outfitted with the high-tech Rumbler -- a siren that makes vibrations that can be felt up to 200 feet away.
The Rumbler is being used with traditional sirens and lights. It's meant to get people's attention faster and encouraging them to make room for officers on their way to emergencies so police can navigate through traffic faster and safer. It's not louder than a regular siren, but the low frequency causes mirrors and everything else to shake.
The Rumbler is part of a new package the department is phasing in. Within four years, all of the D.C. department's marked patrol cars should have the new technology.

Our State Dept vehicles already have them, along with Secret Service.

I pretty much see this freaking out drivers left and right. Might even cause some of them to swerve or make a sudden manuver the officer isn't expecting. 200 feet at speed is not a lot of distance.

God Speed Jeff! You'll never be forgotten.

BOOSTZX3 : in all seriousness head injuries ain't no joke. I've had around 10 concussions and now I ride a Buell Don't let it happen to you!

I guess if you get pulled over for aftermarket exhaust, you can just claim it's your "rumbling alert system.

On another note, I'm not really sure this thing is a good idea, either. There must be some kind of side effect, like making elephant's ears bleed or something...

Its projected fwd, like low level bass, in a bass-off. Little or no vib. is given to the mounted vehicle. We had a blast with it, the past couple months, up and down 95 and downtown. I think Metro bus-drivers need this more than anyone..
