Police charging for gas to catch you! - June 20, 2008, 11:32 AM

The high cost of fueling up is affecting just about everyone at the pump. But it's also costing us at the grocery store, the airport, and, beginning July 1, it could bump up the cost of your speeding tickets, too.

When a north Atlanta suburb spent 60% of its police fuel budget in only five months, it was faced with cutting back on patrols, raising taxes for all, or passing the cost on to speeders. The final decision was a no-brainer for the city of 7,700, and beginning in July, all speeders will be slapped with an additional $12 fuel charge. The added charge will raise ticket revenues up to $26,000 or more, and the costs will only be passed on to those who break traffic laws and not every citizen.

The Atlanta city council has unanimously passed a similar proposal to include a $10 - $15 fine for ticketed motorists, and many more cities are sure to follow suit in short order.

And if it's $12 in Atlanta, it will be $35 in FFX county

Guess they figure well if you ae guilty of speeding then pass the cost on to the guilty. BS, but I can see the argument.

OVER? did you say "Over"? Nothing is over until we decide its over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!!!

Personally, I'll take fee-for-service (which this is) over a tax any day.

Fuck that, put governors on the crusiers so the cops can only go over 55 if the lights and sirens are on...if they're anything like the cops around here cruising around the beltway at 90mph just for the hell of it. See how much gas money that saves!

yeah right!

The least they can do is turn their cars off while they're sitting their browsing through my driving history and deciding how much to fine me.

What's next surcharge for "wasting" their time??

That's BS. Hey police. They're called fines and taxes. We already pay them. We're already paying for your gas. Check into it.

If we pay twice for the fuel for you to chase us down, does this mean you're going to send us tax rebates for your trips to get doughnuts and other non-job-related personal business? Somehow I doubt it.

It's not fee for service, police are not serving speeders... they are serving the public. The public is taxed to provide highway police to "protect" them from speeders.

This is a common misconception. The cops are catching speeders to let them know how fast they were going.
