Portis Out - February 28, 2011, 04:21 PM

No offensive line. QB can't throw so run him into the ground every season.
Don't even begin to negotiate in good faith.
Still a fan favorite and would have made a great RB tandem package with Toraine. Toss him out before he breaks Riggin's record.
Noice. Skins continue their new legacy of fail.

He had a good interview with Wise this morning. Especially speaking about #21

Shanahan had a horrible season last year - he blames it on what he inherited.

Year two will suck as well, he will release McNabb this off season and blame it on not having his QB (look for one to be drafted)

By year 3 he's out of excuses and out of this town...nasty little man

He'll get his 10,000 - too bad it's not as a Skin

I concur.

As for Portis, given the legacy and records, at a minimum you can give him a 3-year extension with 1-year guaranteed and 2 optioned. Let him prove that he's healed and healthy enough to put up numbers in that first year.

See this is the kind of "loyalty" shown by teams that makes players walk-off for the next biggest paycheck they can get - and then the owners say they players want too much money and are too greedy.

They don't realize their lack of loyalty sows the seeds that they reap years later.

I wish they'd have kept him. Was funny watching him try to run. System running back=Portis. I applaud the Shanahan sticking around for more than 1 year decision too. Hasn't won anything w/o Elway, Davis, Sharpe, Mcaffery

I was a fan of his in his earlier years and still like him as a player. He's just forever injured and this is a business. I wish him well.

He was injured all the time because the Redskins (until McNabb) had a marginal passing offense. Screens and swing passes for short yardage were the best they could muster. On occasion you would see something across the middle or the rare long pass.

So that meant running Portis into the ground. I lost track of the times the Redskins would be 3rd and 10 and have to run Portis to see if they could get close the 1st down for the 4th attempt.

He had nearly a full year to heal so he should be at at least 90% of his past form. Go back and look at the offensive numbers and you'll see he shouldered easily 45% of the burden and that is without ANY back-up/3rd down RB worth a damn.

you said nothing special since he left Denver....

Year Team -------------------G--Att--Att/G-Yds--Avg-Yds/G--TD
2008 Washington Redskins 16 342 21.4 1,487 4.3 92.9 9
2007 Washington Redskins 16 325 20.3 1,262 3.9 78.9 11
2006 Washington Redskins _8 127 15.9 __523 4.1 65.4 7
2005 Washington Redskins 16 352 22.0 1,516 4.3 94.8 11
2004 Washington Redskins 15 343 22.9 1,315 3.8 87.7 5

06 was an injury year but that's a tough 5 years to beat. 05 he carried them to the playoffs. Career numbers are second only to the Diesel. Hard to call that "nothing".

is he past his prime now? sure..but to say he did nothing since his 2nd year in the NFL is foolish

^^^This. I think people forget that on the downs that he wasn't running, he was in as a pass blocker and was regarded as the best RB blocker in the league.

You rarely saw a blitz package get thru on his side.

Nah, you're way off. He consistently put in 1000 yd+ seasons and when the play wasn't called for him, they kept him in as a blocker. Washington just never gave him a relief back. That's managements' fault.
If you don't want your #1 RB run into the ground, you have to pick up a capable relief back - someone that can give you 30-40 yards a game while you give your #1 a rest.
