Possibly deploying overseas again - April 10, 2009, 06:13 PM

Got a question for you guys and gals who have deployed over to Iraq and Afghanistan. What did you do with your pets if you had them? I am interviewing for a civilian pilot position and it's looking real good that I will get the offer but I would have to stay for a year. The problem is I can't take my dog Chewie with me. It will be in a combat area not in a place like the green zone. I don't want to give him up but the money is very tempting. I don't have a family who would take him for a year. I don't mind paying for someone to take care of him for me but I don't want to leave him in a kennel for a year. Anyone have any suggestions?

Beautiful dog.

Best choice all around is to leave the dog with Family or friend that is in a stable living situation that can accomodate. And of course people who have a love for dogs.

I thought I might be able to help you out. I don't think I could give him the exercise he deserves.

Maybe check with Dogtopia, if you can't find someone else. They might could give you a deal for a year.

Yeah, he went to Dogtopia in Tysons for daycare everyday but I don't want to leave him there for a year. Especially in this economy. I appreciate the offer but I am not looking to drop him with anyone here just looking for other ideas. He is as close as I am going to get to having a kid so it's important he go with someone we have a long history with. He lost his mom last year when we broke up and is still dealing with that. I might contact her and see if she would be open to it but before I open that door I want to see what my other options are.

Jack, if the dog is dealing with separation issues do NOT send him back to where the other dog is.
If Lee or Paul are willing to give him a good home for a year, take the dog to them and get him acclimated to them and their house. The less trauma you cause him the better. I know that Lee is in the country and has dogs so Chewie would have an easier adjustment. Seriously, so not send him to the place he's going to have a very hard time getting used to. Also, when you come back, do not take him home w/ you right away. If he has emotional issues w/ seperation, it will cause him harm doing it that way too. You being out of the picture for a year, he will forget and get attached to his 'new home'. I love animals. They are actually more sensetive than what folks think.
Nothing against Paul or his parents, but I don't know him/them. I know Lee loves his animals and so does his wife.

Seriously consider this. Do what's best for the dog since he's the one that has to go through the change.

RIP Greg Walker, I will never forget you

If everybody thought before they spoke, the silence would be deafening

the separation issue was with my exgirlfriend Pam not another dog. In anycase I appreciate the suggestions. Not sure yet what I am going to do. I am actually thinking of turning down the job.

Thanks but I am going as a civilian. It's for the money so I guess I am a mercenary. Besides 200K+ for doing what I love to, (fly) what could be better?
