I'm not a LEO, but I think Obama screwed the pooch with this one.

However, screwing up is being human. Nobody can possibly be 100% objective all the time. Not LEO's, and not the President. I really can't blame him for being human.

What's the big deal. I don't know the whole story, but as I understand it the man was arrested after proving he was in his house. If this is the case then it was a stupid thing to do. I think I would be pissed off and yelling at the cops too.

Today, no one can express their opinion unless it is a publicly accepted one.

Well it's more like, he was making so much ruckus that a neighbor called the cops. When the cops showed up to see what the fuss was about. Gates says he was making the ruckus forcing the door open because it was stuck. This is essentially B&E, unless you live there. So the cops ask for proof that he lives there. Rather than calmly show the proof, Gates flips out, starts yelling and accusing the police of being racists.

Well, the cops were already there because he was behaving unreasonably, and then he demonstrates disorderly conduct right in front of them, as well as personally insulting them. Disorderly conduct is an arrestable offense, disorderly conduct is what he did, so he was arrested.

And his excuse of causing all that commotion because of a stuck door? Please, that's a weak sauce bullshit lie he invented on the spot (purely my opinion)

They'd have arrested my ass too if I behaved that way.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up.

Personally I think the officer conducted himself accordingly and I highly doubt that he was a racist. He was polite and straightforward to Gates notifying him that he was responding to a B&E call.

Gates, who was prolly real stressed over not being able to get in his house, flipped out on the cop and assumed the cop thinks Gates is breaking in because he is black.

Frankly, I wish I lived in a neighborhood where someone will notify the police if it looks like someone is breaking into my house. Gates is privileged and is letting it get to his head. He even had the balls to compare himself to the rest of black men in America who deal with racist LEOs. This fucker has no idea what a racist LEO is. (I'm black by the way) I have encountered racist LEO on 2 occasions, one in Anne Arundel County in BFE Deale and one in FFX County.

If that cop wasn't racist (which I truely believe) he is now, thanks to Gates being a fucking idiot and blowing things out of proportion. Doesn't help either that Bam Bam had to call him stupid.

Oh yeah, now there's prolly 1000 new racist LEOs out there because of this, thanks Gates. I hope someone actually breaks in your fucking house and I hope the LEO take there time to get there.

i think the cop was stupid. i think the professor was stupid. And now they are going to have a beer with the most powerful man in the world. go figure.

Boston has very unusual code of conduct rules. its hard to explain, ask a bostoner.

Bravo! I agree wholeheartedly. Does anyone think that Mr. Gates is racist? Pres made a STUPID assumption which led to a more STUPID COMMENT. He obviously should have known better - and Im POSITIVE someone told him so before he blurted those words out.

Nobody was there except the officers and Mr. Gates. As I know everybody knows, there are 3 sides to every story, Mr. Gates side, the officer(s) that were on the scene, and the truth. From what the media portrayed (Fox says one thing, CNN reported something totally different), neither was in the right, but neither was wrong at the same time. Naked_Biker, I can quote you and say yes you are right Gates lives in a community where they respond within seconds/minutes to a B&E call. I have lived in neighborhoods where you can call for somethings and they wouldnt show up for several hours. But for the type of money he brings home and the area he lives in that should be expected. Also, what kind of neighbor is this that can come out and make the call but can not recognize that her OWN neighbor is trying to get into his OWN house.....

My issue with the President's statement is not that he said the officer acted stupidly, and it damn sure aint with the fact that he answered the question. The issue that I have is that the media did not mention anything he said prior to his "acted stupidly" comment. President Obama specifically stated that he only knew what had been reported thus far as we all did (and his statement may be bias because he knew the professor). Maybe I am thinking beyond the statement but last time I checked "stupid" does not mean anything extremely negative. It simple means "acting in an unintellingent or careless manner". Which in my opinion is what happened in this situation. Not saying the officer did anything wrong, but simple did not go into the situation with the best thoughts (going off what was reported at the time).

Another issue that I have with the media since I have seen them portray our new President as illiterate and incompetent, is that they give him a chance to do his job. Correct me if I am wrong but whether you voted for him or not, he has 4 years to get our nation in a better situation than what we are in now, and not even a full 7 months in, they are criticizing every word that comes out of his mouth (i.e. acted stupidly). The nation didn't get to this point in 1 day, month, or year. It damn sure aint going to take 1 day, month, year and maybe not even 4 years to get better but let the man try to do something right. President Bush had 8 years and he wasn't scrutinized by the media no where near as much.
