mp3 is music, mp4 is video....
I don't know that you can convert. I do know that you have to convert any video file to mp4 to play on an ipod...

That's what I thought ... but ...

My son's new Nintendo DS will play audio files (music) ... but it has to be in .mp4 format??

That's weird. Maybe because it has a screen, it wants some kind of video media in the background? You can try using itunes, there's a setting where you can set the music format, not sure if mp4 is an option.

Oh right, the DSi plays .AAC encoded files rather than .MP3 for whatever reason, which can be in a .MP4 container format.
