Question About Comcast Digital Cable - Cable Direct To TV No Longer Working - April 21, 2010, 11:14 PM

So looks like Comcast is back up to it's tom fuckery again.

Sticking a cable in the back of your T/V marked "Cable In" is a system that's worked beautifully for decades. Turn T/V on - there's the picture. Now they want to get all fancy and sheit even with just basic cable.

About a 2 months ago Comcast notified everyone in my area they were going to digital channels. They were pressing everyone to get one of their digital boxes just to get regular transmission, but they said if your T/V had a digital tuner, there wouldn't be a need for the box.

Great. I have a T/V with a built in Cable/QAM card so I never needed to rent Comsucks Cable box. I just had the cable plugged directly into my power conditioner, then out to my T/V.

With my QAM card I had no problems getting both SD and HD channels, although sometimes the channel numbers were off compared to Comcasts guide. (I.e. A&E HD was channel 134-1402 for me. Comcast says it's channel 210). NBC was 4 - NBC HD was 4-1 etc. etc. Occassionally, I'd get On Demand movies too Sweet.

Then last week like the plague - I started losing 10 channels a night all in <100 range. At first I could have cared less b/c it was crap like the Disney Channel, Lifetime, Oxygen, Ion. No biggie. I don't watch those anyway.

Then, I started loosing things like Bravo, History, Food and AMC.

I hit the roof when the other night when they removed ESPN 1 & 2, Speed, and all the HD feeds like NBC, Comcast SportsNet, ABC, Fox, etc.

I literally have next to nothing between channels 2 - 96 with the exception of NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS standard def (which gets cut off because it's all shot in 16:9 but cutting it down like its 4:3) a few Spanish channels, a slew of religious channels, Public Access crap for Bowie State, Howard U, PG County, DC.

I have channels 100-134 but it's not linear. They'll be like a cluster on 102, 102-11, -13, -31, -104 and then channels 103-109 will have nada then pick back up at 110 with another cluster.

QAM cards can only tune up to channel 135, so anything over that I can't even punch in the numbers. It'll default to Chan 2

Motherf*ckers! Stop trying to force me to buy/rent your goddamn box! Worse, the box is one of those junky throwaway Motorola's of such low quality, the picture quality is noticeably WORSE then when I run the cable directly into my T/V.

I know we have a few system provider geniuses on here. Any solutions? Or am I just going to have to eat it?

BTW - this is the hunk of junk they want me to rent from them. From what I've seen it looks like it needs to get authorized through Comcast

I had comcast in Sterling, they didnt make me rent a box though. They just gave me them for how many Tv's I had. No big deal, they shipped them next day fedex, hooked em up, called comcast to have them "programmed" and I was all set. No extra fees

^^Yes, that's true. I should have prefaced it all by saying Comcast will give you 2 boxes for free. I have them both hooked to the bedroom T/V's because one's an old tube and the other's an el-cheapo 720p flat screen. Good bedroom TV's.

But the one out front is the nice HD Samsung that I was going directly into is where I lost all the channels.
When I hooked up the Motorola box, the picture quality was worse than it was before I was going in direct.
I'm sure the chipset they're using in them isn't the best. Not so apparent in the bedrooms (actually makes the tube look a bit better vs. going in direct), but out front it is the suck.

This just reminded me that I need to order one of those for the bedroom TV. I just lost all the channels last week. I have an HDTV in the bedroom, but it's really small and only used for brief viewing, so I'm not really sweating the quality of reception. It's pretty annoying to even have to use these things though. I don't want more junk attached to my tv.

They only been displaying it for like 2 months...
The only way to see ComCast now is with a reciever.

It was because of people like me who stole cable for decades...and my neighbor who stole it from me not knowing i was stealing it.

You read my thread...

i mentioned it .

This is exactly what's going on. I don't want more needless crap attached my TV. I hate having to program one more remote to do a macro. Or having to buy/rent someone elses redundant crap that's of lower quality.

This is an issue my employer is dealing with right now. We have a lot of TVs in the building - i have one myself - and same thing happened to us. As you said, no warning. Comcast has not been able to resolve the matter in any meaningful way for us. We are looking at DirectTV.

Explain? what kind of crap are they playing. Seriously, does any business operate honestly anymore when it comes to billing and offers? There's always some trap or fine print or GOTCHA.

Hell bro, FioS never messed with my bill the whole two year contract.... it was literally $109 + taxes.... Even after my two year contract, it only went up $10. I'm very happy with Verizon.

Damn, you too huh?
Clearly Comcast did not think this one through fully.

I'm not buying or renting their frickin' box. That's that bullshit. They'll give you two for free, but the system before was just fine. I'm not going to be strong armed into paying extra fees for equipment I already have just to watch a service that I already pay for.
