Question About Joining A Foreign Military - July 31, 2014, 02:08 PM

Just curious. I'm reading stories about Jewish American citizens going to Israel to join the I.D.F. to fight in Gaza or enlist in the I.D.F's Reservist Force.

Are American citizens allowed to join a foreign Army/Military Force and still retain their U.S. Citizenship? US troops have to follow the bylaws and rules of combat under UCMJ. The American legal system prosecutes its citizens for actions/crimes committed on foreign soil.

This is all something I have never thought about until now.

I know plenty of Private Security Services, Executive Protection Agencies, and Mercs offer their services to and operate in foreign nations, but they do not officially join another nation's Army or pledge any oath to that nation or protection of such - which if you join a state/nationalist military you typically must.

I have a half brother in Germany. He had dual citizenship and wanted to join the German military. It's my understanding that he had to renounce his US citizenship to join.

It depends on the country. I've heard of people joining the French Foreign Legion with no issues. I'd imagine as long as you're going to join a military that isn't a potential enemy of the US then you'd be ok. I know it's not voluntarily doing it, but I had some friends in school that were dual nationals and had to leave the US after high school to participate in compulsory service in their "native" country.

I still haven't done my military duty in Turkey. I keep on extending it until I could buy it out. Right now I could pay and just do 28 days. You basically sit at a base and watch movies. It's dumb and not conducive to my work life. They'll offer a full pay out soon enough. Mandatory military service is dumb and it's 18 months for poor kids that just come out of school and can't even start their lives (they won't let you get a job without finishing the military service). Oh and the best part is the $100 per month pay and no benefits.

Do you have dual citizenship? Could you just renounce your citizenship to Turkey? It seems pretty crazy they actually require that and pay you nothing.

I have dual citizenship. Technically I can renounce the Turkish citizenship but I'll be entered a list and banned from visiting the country. They take that stuff pretty seriously.

I'm aghast to hear they already haven't banned you yet.

We let plenty of non-US citizens join the US military, so why would the government care the other way? We don't require anyone to renounce the citizenship of their home country, but I think we make it a little easier for them to become US citizens? The combat arms dude in my last squadron was Irish.

I met a guy who served in the Legion, he didn't know a lick of French when he joined and said it was very tough. Dude spent like 30 months of his 5 years of service in Afghanistan. He had tried to join the USMC but they wouldn't take him because of some drug charges he had. They basically let anyone join who is able bodied from what he described.

Pretty crazy stuff.
