Question For Military Guys On Enlisting If Not A US Citizen - July 14, 2016, 11:03 AM

Odd question I know.

The lifeguard for my community who has serviced my community for a few years is one of those genuine stand-up, highly respectful guys. He calls me by Mister and Sir - for which I have to keep telling him to stop.

Each year he comes from Jamaica for 4 months during the pool season, then goes back at the end of the season when his Visa expires.

Always on-time. Always vigilant at the pool. Always very professional and thorough on maintenance and set-up. I told him I wish we had the budget so we could keep him on as a full-time property manager. We'd make the H1-B stuff happen. This summer he hasn't been his normal outgoing self. I could tell something was weighing on him, so I asked "what's up".

Last summer he got a girl pregnant and he has been trying to do the right thing both from a fatherly and financial perspective, but with very few opportunities in Jamaica outside of tourism and call centers it has been tough to travel to the US and send enough money on a regular basis.

He feels his best chance at building a life for his family would be by joining the US Military. I'd like to help him out a bit.

I know there are ways for non-US citizens to enlist in the military but I'm not sure of the exactly protocol or process. Would any of you? He most interested in the Navy, Marines and Army of course. Not sure if has enough of a foundational background for the A/F.

Ok thanks. I'll tell him to get started on the RA process.

In some cases he may need to be naturalized and renounce his Jamaican citizenship.

It can be a long process for individuals not already legal residents.
