Questions for LEO's...moreso Fairfax - June 23, 2008, 09:02 AM

A friend of mine who is a white female, we will say her name is Shannon R. Wagman got a ticket for failure to obey a traffic sign or something to that effect. She went online to pay the ticket and searched under her name. There were 4 Shannon Wagmans listed with tickets. None with the middle intital "R." She went to back and search some time later and found that her name was still not there but a black male named Shannon A Wagman was in the system with her ticket number, the same violation, the same officer, the same date/time and location.

She wants to pay the ticket or at least make sure her record is clean. She has never received a ticket before for anything so she is freaking out.

What should she do?

Thanks!

I have had this happen before - take care of it in person at the courts.

I was once told by a DC cop that if the ticket is incorrect, fighting it in court will often win. This is after he wrote me a ticket and got my middle name mixed up with my last on the ticket.

Unfortunately I didn't take it to court, because DC has this ludicrous policy of making you take time off work, drive downtown and pay to park or Metro in unfamiliar territory just to get your court date. You get to do it all over again if you actually want to fight the darn thing.

No - they have pre-payment lines. You're still pre-paying. Basically it's just an error, A is close to looking like R, and people are retarded

They managed to spell my last name wrong, I could find the ticket, or my name on the docket.

If they want to pay the fine (in person preferred in this case) then just keep the receipt. Again, keep receipt!

Keep a print out showing the list of identical names to better explain to a judge just in case.

Verify accuracy by visiting the court house a few days prior to the trial date and ensure that her name does NOT appear on the docket.

This happened to me... my ticket basically didn't show up in their "pre-payment online ticket database" until it was almost time for my court date. If you read the fine print *somewhere*, it said it can take [I think] 2-4 weeks to show up in the system.

My recommendation: Wait a week or so before the absolute deadline to pay online and recheck to see if it's there. If not there, then go in like the other people suggested. I'm pretty sure you can just mail it in as well... which is what I ended up doing, b/c even if they have a special "lane" for prepayments, it's still a pain to go in.
