Quote of the day - Discourse on Method - July 18, 2006, 02:26 PM

"Good sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed ... the diversity of our opinions, consequently, does not arise from some being endowed with a larger share of reason than others, but solely from this, that we conduct our thoughts along different ways, and do not fix our attention on the same objects. For to be possessed of a vigorous mind is not enough; the prime requisite is rightly to apply it." René Descartes (Discourse on Method)

I had an argument with a good friend on how big turkeys can get. We were talking about turkeys and someone said "yea I saw one launch from a tree, shook the whole damn thing".

I immediately replied "yea those fuckers can get like, 80 plbs"... my friend immediately responded in the negative and corrected me (as he is known to do on occasion). I was forced to find an 86 lb record turkey to defend my argument...

Turns out we weren't even arguing the same thing. He had divided the subject into wild vs. domestic turkeys, where I was just referring to turkeys in general, having actually SEEN one in person only at fairs where they were fattened up and sold.

Also, big bird was made up of over 3000 white turkey feathers dyed yellow.

Suffice to say, I read this years ago and looked it up. The main cause for people disagreeing on truth. It's actually a great book, written MANY years ago by a VERY bright man. I would suggest it. A method of discussion without argument.

This is a formula to seperate the fact from the preconception.

Discourse on Method

The following quote from Discourse on Method presents the four precepts that characterise the Method itself:
1. "The first was never to accept anything for true which I did not clearly know to be such; that is to say, carefully to avoid precipitancy and prejudice, and to comprise nothing more in my judgment than what was presented to my mind so clearly and distinctly as to exclude all ground of doubt.

2. The second, to divide each of the difficulties under examination into as many parts as possible, and as might be necessary for its adequate solution.

3. The third, to conduct my thoughts in such order that, by commencing with objects the simplest and easiest to know, I might ascend by little and little, and, as it were, step by step, to the knowledge of the more complex; assigning in thought a certain order even to those objects which in their own nature do not stand in a relation of antecedence and sequence.

4. And the last, in every case to make enumerations so complete, and reviews so general, that I might be assured that nothing was omitted."

Yeah, that diagram is my job in a nutshell: programming.

Hell, half the meetings I go to involve people arguing over some requirement or process and gradually it comes to light that they were really agreeing loudly.

Next time you are around two people arguing, simply listen to what they are saying. Odds are that they are not even talking about the same point. But each person is so involved in getting their point across that they stop listening to the other. Neither actually listens to what the other is saying.

A simple example is the abortion debate.

Pro-life and Pro-choice are not the same argument!

But "ew" and "oo"...do they rhyme? That is the question.
