Cool Racoon #2 - August 13, 2010, 04:24 PM

So ...

I bought this HUGE bird feeder for my back yard. It holds about 1.5 gallons of seed. I figured I'd get a big one so I wouldn't have to fill it up every week.

It costs about $10 to fill it up.

Anyway, I fill it up in the morning ... next day ... empty.

Hmm.

So, I fill it up agian. Next day ... empty.

So, I check it at night before I go to bed ... still full ... but in the morning ... empty.

I conclude ... racoon or possum.

So, I buy a box trap and a couple cans of cat food and put that out under the bird feeder.

Success!!

LOL.

I drove him out about 15 miles down rte 28 before I let him out.

Reset the trap ... had another one this morning.

So ... here's a video:

They look like young raccoons - probably siblings.
I'm glad you let them go rather than shooting them!
I never knew raccoons liked bird seed!

Yeah ... he was NOT happy.

The one this morning was considerably bigger than the first two.

Will see what tomorrow brings.

I'm letting them go all in the same place ... so, if they are buddies, they can all still hang out together.

LOL.

my neighbors (my second home growing up) had 2 racoons (2 different times) as pets when i was growing up. rudolph( the household dad) found them as babies in an abandond house and raised them. he eventually let the first one go and thinks the second was stolen. they are smarter then one would think, i loved playing with rosco (the first one) he was huge but was tender with his huge claws.

your immune system must be very good! from what I read their disease carrying traits are one of the prime reasons people do not take them as pets
