roadside BBQ, corner of route 50 and 15 in NoVA - July 2, 2009, 04:14 PM

on the weekends, whenever i find myself on route 50 and route 15 just north of haymarket, i've noticed a roadside bbq set up there. has anyone tried it? if i remember right, the guy trailers his smoker up there and has a sign up for bbq.

A friend of mine tried it and said it was awesome. He's not exactly a food critic, but anyone over 350 lbs knows a thing or two about good BBQ

rode by there today and there was a fresh fruit stand and a lobster truck, but no bbq smoker.

i ended up going to the Aldie general store, about a mile west on 50 from the 50/15 intersection. i noticed they had a smoker out front that smelled pretty damn good, so i picked up a half rack of ribs. i wish i could say it was great, but really don't ever go there for ribs. it was more of a grill than a true smoker.

Give it a shot if you ever see it over there. I've had the opportunity to stop by once, but they were already out of ribs (the smell made me slam on the brakes and pull in). From what I hear they sell out every time they're out there. That's usually a good sign.

They are there today. BRIGHT and early, they were setting up and already had the smoker burning at 8am

i stopped by yesterday and picked up a full rack of ribs for $23 and a side of potato salad for $2.50. they also have cole slaw, beans and pork sandwiches. the pork wasn't on the smoker but simmering in a pot on a gas burner.

the ribs and bbq sauce were good. a big disappointment was that there were hardly any smoke rings in the ribs i picked up. but the ones i picked up were cooking only for a few hours, so i guess if you go later in the day it'll be a little better. the meat wasn't fall-off-the-bone tender, but did have a great smoke flavor. i'd go again.
