Run-in with Loudoun County Sheriff's - June 6, 2013, 08:55 AM

Monday evening, June 27th, Sara and I are heading home from 4.5 days at Summit. We are in the Chevy and pulling a "borrowed" 30' toy hauler, both dogs in the truck. Approaching a stoplight in South Riding at Tall Cedars & Loudoun County Pkwy, I decide to change lanes from the left center lane to the left turn lane, after coming to a complete stop due to the light being red for us. I checked and double checked my mirrors, since I'm pulling a big trailer, no vehicles approaching in the left turn lane. I see the sheriff across from us, heading the opposite direction on the pkwy. As I get the truck into the left turn lane, I'm watching my mirrors and see a vehicle enter the left turn lane behind me, I have plenty of room and my truck is already in the turn lane. Our lights goes green and proceed thru the intersection and watch my mirrors...the sheriff has taken some interest in me and makes a right turn behind me from his straight lane. I calmly inform Sara we're going to get pulled over.

We turn into our neighborhood, he's still on us, no lights. We turn onto our street....yep, he's still there, and still no lights.

I pull up in front of our house on the street, blocking neighbors driveways like we normally do when returning home with the toy hauler, and put it in park. White sheriff's car pulls up on my driver's side and kicks on his lights. Sara's not happy about the situation and remembers her Wing's game is starting, so I open the garage and she takes off into the house to set the DVR.

I get out of the truck, recognize said sheriff as Sheriff Smith and greet him as he keys his mic to talk to dispatch, to which he responds with his index finger for me to wait a moment. Then the conversation starts.....

Him - "Do you know why I followed you?"
Me - "Because I don't have a front license plate?"
Him - "Nope, I didn't even notice your missing front license plate. I followed you because you cut a vehicle off in the turn lane back at the stoplight."
Me - "I don't believe I cut him off, I checked my mirrors multiple times before switching lanes and I never saw him until my truck was completely in the turn lane."
Him - "Well, it looked like he had to hit his brakes pretty hard to avoid hitting you. Do you have your license and registration?"
Me - "Of course, let me grab it."
Him - "When was the last time we interacted?"
Me - "When you pulled me over about 9 months ago for dead tags on that red Jeep sitting right there." (I motion to Sara's Jeep parked right next to him)
Him - (he smiles) "That's what I thought. Hang tight while I run your information. If nothing's wrong, I'll be out of your hair in a minute."

60 seconds later he gets out of his cruiser......

Him - "So where are you coming from?"
Me - "Summit Point, I've been out there racing motorcycles."
Him - (he looks at the CRF in the bed of the truck) You weren't racing that, were you?"
Me - (slight chuckle) "Nope, I have a race bike in the camper."
Him - "Summit Point...isn't that BSR?"
Me - "Yep, that's the one."
Him - "Oh yeah, I did a bunch of driver training and shooting classes out there a while ago. It's a nice area out there."
Me - "Yes, it is."

He hands me my license and reg back and tells me to have a nice day. Hops back in his cruiser and takes off.

So, if you ever encounter Sheriff Smith (big, tall, bald white guy), be cool with him because that's my 3rd interaction with him and he's been super nice every time.

True story.

I live in South Riding too... and it is true, if you are cool with the LEOs they usually let you off.

With that said, it just annoys me that they sit there and pull you over for petty shit, like dead tags that expired 24 hours ago, etc, they will tail you for ever if you are in a sports car/bike and look for any MINUTE reason to pull you over.

When they pull me over, they have a field day just by looking at my record. Sigh... I havent gotten a speeding ticket in well over 3 years. *knock on wood*

So Sara took off into the house after the cop put his lights on? Good thing the cop did not blow that up.

Also you blocked your neighbors driveway after all the bitchin you do about them being in yours? Ballsy!

Always can count on you, Dodge.

We had the driveway blocked for approx 15 minutes. And, if they were to have arrived home while I was parked there, I was prepared to move the truck.

Not really; a cop has followed me home before

It's what I do.

Glad you did not get a ticket. Kinda of a weird pull over cause I have seen people do some seriously stupid shit infront of a cop and the cop does nothing.
