School me on Forsensics Software - December 13, 2012, 01:44 PM

I need to find some good PC forensics/data recovery software. But I also need to be able to use it without a friggin training course. Anyone got any tips? Getting that stuff that is deleted, find intentionally renamed files (renaming the extension to hide it), etc.

Someone told me good things about the AccessData brand.

Need more info on what you want to do. If you need something quick and relatively easy and somewhat cheap look up Paraben. AccessData FTK is hella expensive. There are also a lot of tools on the linux side but there is not community support.

I use a software called "File Scavenger"

It does a pretty good job. Success depends on how long ago the data was deleted and if that part of the disk has been used after file was deleted.

If you are trying to recover multimedia it won't be useful, if its text or email then you will likely be successful. There may be a few sections of wing dings and random characters but it does a good job. I've recovered a lot of stuff with this software.

Other than using some utility, your other option would be to send the disk to OnTrack for recovery which costs $1500 and up. Depending if you have to recover from RAID array or single disk.

I've downloaded but haven't tried out the SIFT ubuntu distro for use tonight when i go back to the jobsite.

I need to recover documents (especailly images, .doc/.wpd and videos) and find hidden files. Or files with renamed extensions that were renamed to hide them in plain sight. I've got OSforensics, Encase, Autopsy and couple others (trial). I will eventually purchase something.

Should've posted what purpose I needed it for. I've done this before way back when (to recover my own deleted files) but now it's serious.

Thanks for the tips!
