School Stabbing in CA, time to ban knifes? - November 4, 2015, 02:20 PM

Holly Crap, I lived in that area for almost 5 years. Kinda close to home.

Anyhow:

Five people were stabbed Wednesday at the University of California, Merced. The suspect was shot by police and later died, the UC Merced Police Department said. Two of those stabbed were transported for treatment via helicopter, the school tweeted, while the three others were treated on campus.

If knives were allowed on campus other students would have been able to neutralize the guy sooner.

All political "jabs" aside, CA State Colleges have an existing rule on knives that is strict, to wit:

"any dirk, dagger, ice pick, knife having a blade longer than 2 1/2 inches, folding knife with a blade that locks into place, razor with an unguarded blade, taser, or stun gun: Reference - California Penal Code Section 21510 and California Penal Code 626.10(b)."

That's stricter than, say, high schools in Fairfax County, where students may carry a knife, even a locking one, as long as it is not a switchblade or a blade three or more inches in length.

I was referring to banning knifes as a whole, you know since this was the 2nd incident dealing with knifes.

Don't bring to knife to a gunfight.

FCPS does not allow knives.

I stand corrected- for knives under three inches there is no mandatory sanction- it is up to the discretion of the principal. Here's the section that provides for mandatory sanction for switchblades and knives with blades three inches or longer

"Possession of Switchblades, Machetes, and Certain Other Knives – Mandatory Sanction and
Recommendation
Possession of any machete, any switchblade knife (regar
dless of blade length), or any other knife with a
blade length of three inches or more on school property
or at a school-sponsored activity shall result in a
ten-day suspension from school and a recommendation fo
r expulsion. Provided, however, that where a
student is found for the first time to be in possession of a machete, switchblade knife, or other knife with a
blade length of three or more inches with no indica
tion of malicious intent, there will be an expedited
review of the written record by the Division Superin
tendent to determine if special circumstances exist
such that a disciplinary action
other than expulsion is appropriate"

I guess that explains why kids get I in trouble for having a table knife for the Apple in their lunch box. Table knives are usually longer than 3". Lol.

I can assure you guys a knife of any sort in ffx county is a no go. There is no asterisk behind that. If they find you with anything you are rest assured to get expelled and possible criminal charges. Just a heads up.

Crikey, I brought it up 'cause my son (who graduated last year from FCPS) has a classmate and neighbor who lives down the block from us (now a Junior, I think) who brings a knife to school every day and showed me his "school" knife last year. He carries a printout of the "under 3 inch blade" clause from the County's regulations. He's a knife nut with dozens of blades and he takes various sword lessons. I'd better give him a call, and print out the latest version of the regulation, found here:

(CNN)The 18-year-old freshman who stabbed four people at University of California, Merced, was apparently motivated by a personal vendetta and not any terrorist or political agenda, authorities said Thursday.

Faisal Mohammad, a computer science and engineer major from Santa Clara, California, began stabbing people Wednesday morning in a freshman general education class in which he was enrolled, said Chancellor Dorothy Leland.
Mohammad "appeared to have been motivated by personal animosities, not a political agenda," the chancellor said.

We have to stop the proliferation of these high capacity assault knives

Clearly the issue is with the lack of signage.

Clearly the problem is that the criminals refuse to follow the laws.

The only solution; create stronger and more restrictive laws which they will follow.
