scooter question - July 16, 2009, 07:01 PM

random question. in MD a scooter with under 50cc's can be ridden on the roadway without the need for registration (or insurance). however one of the things they use to define a scooter is a step through chassis (as opposed to a step over). why is that a big deal? i realize that's what separates a motorcycle/bicycle from a scooter, but how is that any safer or less hazardous than a 50 cc motorcycle that meets the same requirements?

here's a link to the MD laws:

oh and just an fyi, apparently you still need some sort of license to operate these on the roadways, (not necessarily an M though). so dui or suspended won't be able to just grab a scooter and ride. and i suspect that also means you can get pulled over and have it affect your license. so i don't think you can just use one of these to blast to and from bars .
