Seat Upholstery - August 4, 2013, 08:43 PM

Anyone have a good local or mail away source for upgrading the foam/cover on your seat? I used to visit a guy down in Gloucester that restored old furniture but he went out of business (stumbled in there to have something fixed for my mother in law and he did my seat while talking for $35 on my old XZ550).

My V-strom has over 160k on the seat. It hasn't been bad for 1-2 hours but on our all day riding trip in WV it hurt like crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

I've done a number of recovers for bikers, however, if you are "feeling the seatpan" after 160,000 miles of use, it sounds like the foam has started to lose resiliency. That's a different kettle of fish.

Your stock seat has the foam cast into shape, bonded to the seat pan, and then a molded vinyl seat cover in bonded to the foam and the seat pan. Sculpturing a block of high-density foam to fit both the seatpan and your bum is a time consuming process, and I've checked around and molded replacement foam for you bike isn't available. You may want to try a gel insert, or, if the original seat was originally comfortable and you've just ridden it to death, try finding an OEM on Ebay or CL. I've seen them for 50-75 bucks.

Failing that, you may want to try Corbin or Sargent seats. Both of them make long-distance comfy seats, but they are not cheap.

For the interim period, you may want to try an Airhawk Airseat that straps on over the seat, or an add-on gel pad. That would get you through till the end of the season.

If you want to do it cheaply, you could wait till the end of the season and then I could do it in the off season when I'm not so backed up.

Fitz- how much is the factory gel seat? Since we're still searching for houses I feel wretches about spending anything right now but hopping off the bike with a sore tailbone is not the way to go through life.

Someone just sent me this guy for the foam upgrade

Maybe worth the $75 to have him redo the foam then if I care about how the seat looks find a guy to do the cover. Looks like he's getting good reviews on a few internet forums.
