And the sentence for non-compliance... - July 31, 2013, 08:26 AM

Death!

Florida deputies shoot man they mistook for car thief at his own house - CNN.com

I joke, but that's the takeaway. Sherriff's spokesman basically says if you're drunk, on drugs, or don't feel like responding within the timeframe our trigger-happy employees feel comfortable... we will shoot 18 times at you.

This guy is lucky that apparently these two cops can't hit the broad side of a barn (this is not a warming thought for disarming the public and leaving these guys and criminals as the only gun-weilding cowboys). Shot on his own carport trying to find a cigarette.

Maybe they forgot to bring thier flashlights with thier guns? Need Lasik? Need to find a job where thier inability to manage tension and personal sense of danger doesn't result in them killing a dude on his carport?

Good thing he did not have a hoodie on. Dear god who teaches cops these day? What ever happened to using common sense and not put yourself or your partner in a situation were you have to shoot.

It indicates a pervading mentality within our police force, an assumption they approach with. "This person is armed, this person is dangerous to me".

They are literally approaching everyone with the expectation that they will meet resistance, and they will attempt to assault the police officers. That's a dangerous mentality to arm with a weapon and god complex.

If you have cable, your personal sense of tension builds up.
If your personal tension builds up, you feel in danger.
If you feel in danger, you want to empower and protect yourself.
If you want to empower and protect yourself, you become a sheriff's deputy.
If you become a sheriff's deputy, you shoot people in the leg.
Don't shoot people in the leg, get DISH.

Dammit, Florida.

Wasn't there a case not too long ago where 2 Florida LEO's knocked on a man's door at like 2am (while not identifying themselves), and the man answered the door armed with a pistol and the LEO's saw the pistol and immediately shot him down?

edit: found it.

These are trained professionals... Did a bunch of LAPD recently relocate to FL or something?

The deputy that pulled the trigger first should be charged with attempted manslaughter, I can forgive the second one. If your partner starts shooting it would be a natural response to assume they have seen something you missed that justifies it and follow suit.

The second deputy may just need a bit more training. The first one is too scared of their own shadow at best, and a wanna be gunslinger at worst. Either way even if he doesn't get charged (and he won't) he needs to be retired ASAP.

The one cop unloaded almost a full clip. Glock 22 carries 15+1. Between them they only hit the car 5 times. Where the hell did the other 8 or so bullets go!!! JEEEZUZ...

I agree that there should be a manslaughter charge. I love the CYA from the police spokesman "The message to the public is this was a tragedy," Morgan said. "And it was a tragedy because we had an individual, a citizen, who for whatever reason, either impairment due to alcohol or drugs, or just taking it upon himself (in his own driveway, on his own property) not to be compliant to following basic direct orders."

It's really sad to see what police are getting away with these days. If "mistakes" like this were to happen to normal citizens they'd be in jail for life and the police officers would be calling them idiots. But all of a sudden it's ok just because they were police officers. If nothing comes of this I have zero faith in our future.
