This guy is going to attempt to freefall from 23 miles above the earth and parachute his way back to the ground all while trying to break the sound barrier. It's quite ambitious to say the least. I will definitely be following this story.

Noice. Look up Project Excelsior and Joseph Kittinger for information regarding his 19.5 mile jump done back in the late 50s and early 60s.

Actually, Kittinger is a advisor to Baumgartner. I can't wait to see video of the jump.

Edit: Shit. The video mentions all of that. The things I know aren't good enough.

how is he gonna break the sound barrier? i though the terminal velocity for a human sky diver isnt above 200 mph.....

Air density is the limiting factor. He'll start well above that.

Terminal velocity is 125 mph. I highly doubt hell break 761 mph (speed of sound). If he ever reached that velocity the friction would burn him up. Hell if he ran that fast, the friction would burn him up.

There's more to it. The answer is 'yes you can'. I don't have time for a physics lesson right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger#Legacy

On August 16, 1960, he made the final jump from the Excelsior III at 102,800 feet (31,300 m). Towing a small drogue chute for initial stabilization, he fell for four minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 614 mph [1][2] (988 km/h or 274 m/s) before opening his parachute at 18,000 feet (5,500 m). Pressurization for his right glove malfunctioned during the ascent, and his right hand swelled up to twice its normal size.[3][4] He set historical numbers for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall (four minutes), and fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere[5]. These are still current USAF records, but were not submitted for aerospace world records to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).

Shuttles hit in excess of 6 G's when they re-enter, as well as burn off about 2 inches of carbon plating... how a PERSON is going to be able to do this at Mach1 is beyond me...

There is no air to create friction at 28 miles up. You aren't very good at reading comprehension, are you? This is about the 500th time it appears that you don't grasp the full concept of what you've read and still choose to comment in a manner that is completely off base.

IF you're uninformed, don't open your mouth. You're making yourself look like an ignorant ass.
