Small Plane crashed into High Rise in Manhattan, NYC - October 11, 2006, 02:47 PM

Check CNN.com frontpage

developing story link
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/11/plane.crash/index.html

Basically a plane crashed into a residential sky rise. That is all that is known. People are wondering if its a terrorist act.

Sounds like an accident a small general aviation aircraft will only cause minimum damage to a skyrise.

Fighters were scrambled to fly combat air patrols above major cities. The flight currenly above DC is about to do some mid-air refueling.

CNN says it was said by emergency responders that a call was made from the plane's comm indicating a fuel problem.

Although nothing is certain as of now, it looks to be an accident. I don't mean to be insensitive, but I hope this doesn't screw up my commute.

Yeah, just saw this on CNN. Seems it was a Cirrus SR-20 (really nice airplane...Our flight school has 2) owned by Cory Lidle. Wow.

Don't those have the ballistic recovery system? Why could the pilot not use the parachute?

From what I've been reading, it seems as though they had a fuel issue and were trying to make it back to LaGuardia. Don't know if they tried to make a turn and crashed into the building or what...But yes, the aircraft does have the Ballistic Recovery System. All Cirrus airplanes do.

From the witness reports it sounds like they pulled up to avoid another building and probably stalled into the other building.

this plane is harder to fly I think because there is a stick like a fighter plane not a wheel like usual plus he only has been a pilot for 7 months so ........such a shame

err. not so much, Stick/yolk, same difference. If anything I've found a stick easier to fly with, much more direct control inputs.

Confusing the issue, since before you were ugly.

I wonder if this guy (R.I.P.) is going to be chastised by the media for engaging in such blatantly reckless hobbies, like that cowboy Ben Roethlisberger. =)
